Reading, Sass . , rugust 8, 1927
A meeting of the Finance Committee was held this evening
at the Municipal Building.
Present: Messrs. Ruggles , Briggs, Fairchild, Haley,
Devaney, Moyer, Porch, Knox, Dickey, Scott, Mount and
Mrs. Ellison.
Meeting called to order at 7.30 PM by Chairman Ruggles .
In view of the article in the warrant with reference to
the Junior High ol

grounds and view the work already
done and that proposed by the additional $5000. asked for .
After viewing the proposition the Committee re-convened at
8 PM, and Articles in the warrant were considered in the
order wbioh follows :

Mr. Colas appeared before the Committee and stated that
the situation in Van Norden Rd.. has not improved since the
annual Toon Meeting when said meeting voted to authorize the

Chairman Owen of the BLrad of Public works also spake
on the subject . Said there would have to be 3400 feet of
pipe laid and stated that the Board believed these residents
should have the nater.

Mr. John A. Robarts appeared for this Article and explain-

Mr . Owen of the Board of Public works also spoke on this
articled, stating approximately 1600 feet of pipe must be laid.
Further that these people have practically no fire protection
and that the need for nater was great. The Board of Public
war Works were of the opinion that water should be furnished these
resi dente .

Mr. J . D. Kniebt spoke for this Artir.le. Explained that

expended in cleaning out book on north side of land and in
putting on loam and seeding. Mr. Knight offered the suggestion,
in view of the large amount of time and erergy expended by
Chairman Albert R. Shepardson of the Sebool Committee on the
whole proposition, that it would be a fltting thing to name
the play-ground when finished the Albert R. Shepardson
Playground.

Mr. Henry R. Johnson spoke on the proposition and emphasiz-
ed the remarks of Mr. Knight , stating that in his opinion the
amount asked for would do an ,"oeptable job.
Mr. C. M. Spencer spoke of the future value of the general
'► proposition to the town, notwithstanding the loss of taxes
caused by the taking of this land for the purpose of public
building.
ARTICLE 2
Selectmen Trevor and Currell spoke in favor of this
article. It was explained that an exhaustive study of the
proposition of oVor;rolling the traffic through the square bad
been made and they thought the present beacon, made by the
American Gas Accumulator Co. was working out in a very satis-
factory meaner . .Asked by Chairman Rua2les if the matter could
not be posponed until the Annual Town Meeting, they thought
in view of the very fair attitude of the manufacturers the
matter should be handled now.
The Silectmen spoke further of the contemplated change
by making the beacon and booth one unit, in which event the
resent base could be salvaged to the amount of $60.001or
70.00.
ARTICLE 4
Mr . Henry R. Johnson of the Light Board appeared for
this article and explained of the crowned conditions under
which the department was now working.
Iftw On inquiry by the Chairman Mr. Johnson felt that altbougb
no appropriation was called for , there was still an expenditure
of money involved and be would like to hove the Committee
consider the proposition.
Temple 's Necktie Co. propose Arenting an addition to
INA " their building and charging the Department 6% on the investment
and 6% on the aseement of the property, which would figure in
the opinion. of Mr. Johnson about ;15C. 00 per month. The
proposed facility would give the Department an opportunity
for display window and room, as well as a meter room in the
_, rear. Mr. Johnson felt that the increased business would
pay for the additional expinse.
