HomeMy WebLinkAbout1936-01-08 Finance Committee Minutes Finance Committee Meeting January 8, 1936. The meeting was called to order by the Chairman at 8 o'clock. The following letters were read, having been furnished in reply to requests from the Committee; From the Board of Assessors - estimates of valuation of real estate and personal property for 1936; actual valuation of the same for 19351, abatements for 1934 and for 1935. From the Collector of Taxes - percentage of unpaid taxes as of Dec. 31, ]ate for the years 1932 to 1935 inclusive; also unpaid taxes Dec. 31, 1935 on the levy of 1934 and the same on the levy of 1935. From the Mechanics Savings and Reading Co-operative Banks - a letter regarding payments on mortgages and intere.*t and general conditions likely to prevail in 1936. From the Welfare Department - a general opinion as to conditions like to prevail in 1936. There was considerable discussion regarding Welfare expenditures, in view of the fact that this Department has the spending of so large a sum It was suggested that it might be desirable for members or groups of membe to visit the Welfare Department on consecutive Friday evenings in order to get a full knowledge of the problems confronting the Welfare Department and its method of procedure. It was voted that the Clerk obtain from each and every Department its budget for 1936 and send the same to the members of the Finance Committee not later than Wednesday, January 15th, and that the Committee meet next on -Friday evening, January 17th. It was also voted that all Boards and Committees be requested to meet with the Finance Committee on Wednesday evening January 22nd, at whit: time the matter of restoration of salaries would be considered. Mr. Charles F. Trevor, having been appointed by the Selectmen to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Howard P. Knox, was sworn to the faithful performance of his duty by the Clerk. It was voted that the Clerk be instructed to write a letter to Mr. Knox expressing the appreciation of the Finance Committee for his long and faithful services and its regret that he had found it nezessary to resign his membership.
