HomeMy WebLinkAbout1935-02-22 Finance Committee Minutes F , Finance Committee Meeting February 22, 1935. The meeting was opened at 9.35 A.M. by the Chairman. The remaining Board of Public Wbrks budgets were taken up. The matter of Snow & Ice removal was discussed and Mr. Birnie was called in and answere questions in regard to the matter. He was also questioned in regard to Storm Water Drainage Construction. It was VOTED - to recommend $2,500.00 Storm Water Drainage, Article 27. It was moved that A2,400.00 be recommended for the Park Department, which motion was later withdrawn and it was voted to recommend $2,000.00. The School Department Salaries were next taken up. Mr. Dickie moved that 8173,539.00 be recommended for School General Salaries, Mr. Devaney contended that motion was out of order as the Finance Committee had pre- viously voted against restoration of pay cuts. The motion was not seconded. Mr. Dickie then moved that the vote of January 16th regarding salaries be reconsidered and the vote was as follows : for reconsideration - Dickie, Cotton, Roberts, Ellison, Devaney (5) ; against - Scott, Haley, Currell, Sturges,es Knox Mount (6) . The report of the sub committee on Schools g � � P was further discussed. On motion of Mr. Haley it was voted that $176,507.0 be recommended for General School Salaries Yes - 10, No - 1. Mr. Dickie wished to be recorded as voting against (he favoring the larger amount) and also suggested a minority report on the matter. On motion of Mr. Knox it was voted to recommend $ 47,603.00 for General School Main- tenance. On motion of Mr. Sturges it was voted that $2,775.04 be recommended for Agricultural Salaries provided that this amount did not include salary raise, the Accountant to ascertain and change the figure. This figure should be changed to $2,506.40. Mr. Dickie wished to be recorded as voting no for the same reason as stated above. On motion of Mr. Sturges it was voted that $540.00 be recommended for Agricultural School Maintenance and $ 1500 for School Tuition. It was voted not to recommend the item in the School budget of $ 3,450.00 for E.R.A. material for buildings etc., it being the opinion of all that this could be taken care of in larger appropriation proposed. The Board of Selectmen, Chairman Leman, Killam, Morton appeared, having been asked in, particularly in regard to need of additional patrol- men. Mr. Leman spoke at some length and stressed the need of the two additional men for traffic duty. Mr. Killam spoke on Article 16 - Land for John Street Dump, Mr. Leman spoke on Article 20 - Municipal Advertising and Article 25 - Damage Suit Settlement. The Public Works budgets were then taken up. On motion of Mr. Sturges it was voted to recommend $10,000 for Snow Removal. There was some discussion regarding the Sewer Department budget, especi ly an item of $2,260.00 for purchase of Supplies and Tools. No vote was taken. . ' 'Mr. Dickie then moved that $32,096 be recommended and it was so voted. It was voted to recommend $$15,000 for purchase of material as called for in Article 24. The Planning Board budget was again taken up and Mr. Watts was sent for to give the Committee further information. After discussion it was voted to reconsider the previous recommendation of Feb. 13th, but it was again voted to recommend $$1000.00, the understanding being, that remaining expense be taken from Special Appropriation, Article 24, although the Committee could furnish no guarantee. It was voted to recommend $$100,000.00 for Public Welfare to be allocated by Town Accountant after conferring with Public Welfare Board. It was voted to recommend $5000.00 for Reserve Fund, Art. 8. t .. February 22, 1935 Cont.
