The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7-30 P.M.
Present were Chairman Walker, Messrs. Hopkins, Johnson, Kilgore,
Donahue and Assistant Superintendent Putnam.
Minutes of previous meeting read and approved.
Received letter from Laurence Drew, 103 Scotland Road, requesting
that the open culvert existing on the Easterly side of his- property be
enclosed in pipe. Taken under advisement, pending field survey.
Received letter from Frank Anderson, 164 South Street, requesting
permission to connect his cellar with the storm water drain in South
Street.
Permission granted, after usual condition relating to cellar drains
have been complied with.
Received letter from Edward A. Brown, T.M.M. Precinct 2, of 28
Oak Street, regarding High School Sewer, etc.
Placed on file .
Bids received at 8:00 P.M. for construction of roads, storm drains
and water mains on Oakland, Parkview, Hillside, Longfellow Roads and
Hartshorn Street.

from No. 14 to No. 8 Nichols Road.

After a lendtliy discussiori, it was voted, due to the opposition
of three abuttors, not to extend the sewer.
Mr. Charles Kieran, of Malden & Melrose Gas Light Company,
appeared before Board to request a ldeation for a proposed 6^, gas main
on West Street, from Oak Street to South Street, in the sidewalk area
on the Easterly side of West Street. He stated that 'the primary purpose
of the proposed extension was to service a new housing development in
Woburn, on the former Russell farm, but that three applications had been
received from West Street residents for gas services. He also stated
that a new black-top sidewalk five feet in width would be installed•on
.West Street, East sidg, by the•Gas .Company if the ,permit were granted.
Decision on granting of permit taken under advisement, pending
survey of West Street sidewalk, 1
Hearing at 9:30 P.M. on pole locations as follows:
Linden Street - 1 pole - on Westerly side of street at Southerly

corner of Driveway to Parking Lot.
Oakland Road - from Waverly (Private) Road to Longfellow Road
' Hillside Road - from Grandview (Private) Road to Oakland Road.
Mr. Stuart F. Richards - 153 Bancroft Avenue - appeared at
Hearing as an abutting property owner. He had no objection to the
- pole location. Voted pole location as listed herein.
Following Granite Curbing Application received, approved and
placed on file;
Helen M Goodridge and Ruth M. Goodridge - 103 village Street, V
Received copy of letter from Whitman & Howard to Bagarella
Construction Company Inc. , regarding surfacing of Hancock Street,
Placed on file.
Received letter from Fire Chief Lames requesting permission to
lay an underground conduit in sidewalk corner of Main and Union Streets
to enable a telephone connection to be made to Police Traffic Booth,
Permission granted.
Received letter from Personnel Board approving salary increases
as voted by the Board on September 21, 1953 to certain unskilled Labor
classified employees, also approving the hiring of John Goodwin as
Rodman in the Engineering Division at the minimum salary rate.
Received from Department of Labor and Industries Classifications
and Minimum Wage Rates for Mechanics, Teamsters, Chauffeurs and Laborers
employed in Installation of Pumping Equipment for the proposed force
sewer pumping station construction.
Considered request of Mr. Dewey of Reading Custom Laundry for
lower sewer rental rates.
No action taken.
Considered letter and sketches from Elmer R. Batchelder, 125
Franklin Street, regarding proposed sub-division of land off Franklin

Street. Instructed Assistant Superintendent Putnam to contact Mr.
Batchelder and advise him that outlet on Nelson ( Private) Avenue
- would be more feasible than a traffic circle on his proposed sub- J
division.
Received copies of Chapter 674 of the Acts of 1953 entitled
"an Act Relative to Planning Board and Establishing a Sub-divisbn
Control Law", which revises and adds to Chapter 41 of the General Laws
(Section 81-A to 81-66, inclusive) .
• Voted to hold a special meting of the Board immediately following
the Special Town Meeting to be held Monday, October 5, for the purpose
of awarding the contract for High School roads, drains and water mains.
