HomeMy WebLinkAbout1953-09-21 Board of Public Works Minutes September 21, 1953 ' The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P. M. Chairman Walker, Messrs, Donahue, Hopkins, Johnson, Kilgore, and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Discussed offer of Little League to donate to Town a storage building on the Little League Field, Voted to recommend to Town that the offer be accepted. Conferred with Mr. Pearson and Mr. Jones, of Whitman & Howard, Consulting Engineers. Discussed at length and in detail the proposed sewer pumping station location and plan and the general main sewer locations and plans. Voted to rescind the motion made September 14, 1953 instructing ' Whitman & Howard not to lay force main from Willow Street to the crossing under the R. R. tracks. Voted to approve proposed sewer pumping station location on the northerly side of Willow Street. Considered recommendation of Superintendent that John Goodwin, 7 Auburn Street, Wakefield, Mass. , as a'rodman at $1.15 per hour. Voted to approve recommendation and to submit appointment to Personnel Board for approval. Received letter from Selectmen requesting that this Department use the Department bulldozer to fill a hole on the property of the Reading Custom Laundry. Voted to request an opinion from the Town Counsel as to the ' legality of such action. Received letter from State Department Public Works, relative to meeting on October 15, 1953 on. Chapter 90 matters, i - -2- Voted to request the following program for 1954. CHAPTER 90 CONSTRUCTION Street Town Counts State - Total ' Charles Street $5,000 $5,000 $10,000 $20,000 CHAPTER 90 MAINTENANCE Various $1,000 $1,000 $1,000 $3,000 Considered letter from Elmer Batchelder relative to development of lands adjacent to Franklin Street. Laid on table. Considered estimate for resurfacing Hancock Street as prepared by Superintendent. Instructed Superintendent to refigure estimate and reduce same by subtracting cost of patching by contractor. Considered recommendation of Superintendent for salary increases ' to laborers receiving minimum or near minimum unskilled salaries. Voted to approve the following increases and submit them to the Personnel Board for approval. Harold Abell - From 1.20 per hour to 1.25 per hour.
