The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:00 P.M.
Messrs. Hopkins, Johnson, Kilgore, and Superintendent Welch
were present.
Mr. Hopkins acted as Chairman.
Conferred with-the following members of the School Committee-
Messrs. White, Griffin, Glover, Morton and Lord. Following items were
discussed -
1. Contractor desires water installed by July 1, 1953 - Board
stated they could not meet this data.
2. Parking area in rear of High School near Hartshorn Street
Extension.
3. Athletic Development of Birch Meadow.
Agreed to meet with School Committee and Architect on the
evening of April 13, 1953.
Received letter from School Committee giving report on progress
of High School Construction.
Conferred with Messrs. Renison and Porter relative to sewer
extension in Nichols Road.
Voted to loan three trucks to Little League on Saturday April
11, 1953 to haul gravel provided they are operated by Department
employees.
Voted to hold meetings of the Board on the following evenings -

April 13, 20, 27 and May 4, 11, 18 and 25.
Considered report of Superintendent relative to applicants for
,jobs in Engineer Division.
Voted to advertise jobs in the Boston Globe of Sunday, April
12, 1953.

Received letter from Elliott Court 205 Pearl Street r6questing
permission to erect a fence on the north side of his property along the
Town Easement.
Voted to grant permission as requested.
Received from Department of Labor and Industries Wage Rates for
Sewer and Road Projects.
Considered letter from Town Counsel relative to Street Betterment
J Assessments.
1 Received letter from G. E. Ninde, 171 Woburn Street requesting
that so called Virginia Road Extension be officially named Virginia
Circle.
Voted to agree to request.
Received letter from M. B. Plummer, 18 School Street requesting
an abatement on his February 1953 sewer bill.
' Voted not to grant abatement.
Received letter and plan from Blanchard Motors, Inc, requesting
permission to install a 10 foot driveway across the sidewalk to their
used car lot on Main Street next to the Reading Diner.
Voted to approve the plan and request as amended.
iFollowing Granite Curb Applications received, approved and placed
on file; Ralph Keene - 93 Oak Street
Malcolm Plummer - 18 School Street
Following Bituminous Concrete Sidewalk Applications receiv/gd,
approved and placed on fib; Leon Michon - 80 Bancroft Avenue l
Received letter from Reading Rotary Club requesting permission to
hold an auction on so called Elm Park on Wednesday May 20, 1953.
Voted to grant permission to Rotary Club as requested.
Received petition from many abuttors on Penn. Avenue, California
Road and Virginia Road, requesting that the sewer be extended in these
Streets.

Placed on file Pending preparation of plans and availability of
funds.
Considered contracts for Whitman and Howard for consulting work J
on Sewer and Road Projects.
Laid on table.
Considered note from Superintendent relative to added office space.
Laid on table.
Board adjourned at 10:15 P.M.
