HomeMy WebLinkAbout1952-10-27 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass, October 27, 1952 ' The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7;00 P.M. Chairman Hopkins, Messrs. Kilgore, Walker and Superintendent Welch were present. Received letter from Carl Pitman, 23 Oak Street, requesting an abatement on his bill for the replacement of his water service because of den age done to his' lawn and evergreens. Voted to abate the bill in its entirety. Considered letter from Selectmen relative to construction of gravel sidewalk on the vest side of Haverhill Street from Franklin Street to near the North Reading line. Superintendent estimated a ' cost of $2,500. Voted to include in 3,953 Budget as a separate item. Considered letter from Selectmen suggesting a partial widening of Franklin Street in two locations between Haverhill Street and Main Street. Voted to inform Selectmen that Board feels these partial widenings would not be feasible and that the {w ^dsection of Franklin Street between Main Street and Haverhill Street should be widened as one project. Considered note from Superintendent relative to petition of several abuttors in the vicinity' of' Birch Meadow requesting better drainage facilities. Superintendent reports this is not possible except . by starting at the source in Woburn and extending into Birch Meadow. , Following Granite Curb Application received, approved and placed on file; / Edward M. Halligan -- 37 Salem Street -2- Considered report of Superintendent on request for sewer extension in High Street from Dudley Street to Mineral Street, Superintendent reported this would be, an expensive extension and would not serve many properties. Voted to inform applicant Board does not feel the extension is feasible. Voted following pole locations: Walnut Street - West Side - Pole 96/39 Moved 19 feet Northerly. Voted to prepare a resolution of sympathy and present same to Mrs. John Harrison on the loss of her husband Mr. John Harrison 4 an active member of this Board. Considered request of several abuttors on Tennyson Road, ' requesting a field between 22 and 32 Tennyson Road be drained, Superintendent reported this is a filling project and not a storm drain project but that a pipe under the sidewalk will offer reasonable drainage. Voted to lay pipe under sidewalk and to place petition on file. Voted to meet with School Committee on the evening of Nov. 12, 1952 at 8:00 P.M. Conferred with Selectmen and considered the following items: 1. Also discussed problems of personnel in general and at length. Also discussed parts of 1953 Budget, After conference with Finance Committee, the Board discussed at length the various matters raised in the Finance Committee conference.
