HomeMy WebLinkAbout1952-10-20 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass October 20, 1952 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7 :00 P.M. Chairman Hopkins, Messrs. Donahue, Kilgore, Walker and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Received letter from Selectmen stating there will be a Special Town Meeting on December 11 1952. Considered possible transfers at Special Meeting. Voted to request following transfers: Amount From To ? 3,500.00 Water Supply Well Construction 900.00 Drain Const.Salaries Drain Const. Expenses 600.00 Sidewalk Salaries Sidewalk Expenses Not Known Pension Account .. Received letter from several abuttors on Whittier Road commending Board for piping open ditch at end of road. Voted following pole locations: Wakefield Street - Pole 94/1L. moved 7 feet Northwesterly Whittier Road - " 2096 " 2 " Northerly Received letter from Selectmen relative to possibility of widenings on Franklin Street near Haverhill Street and near Main Street. Superintendent instructed to investigate. ' Received letter from Selectmen relative to possibility of constructing a sidewalk on the West side of Haverhill Street presumably north of Franklin Street. -2- Superintendent instructed t o investigate. Received petition from several abutters on Tennyson Road ' requesting certain drainage facilities to drain low lying area in rear of Nos. 22 to 32. Superintendent instructed to investigate. Hearing at 7:30 P. M, on proposed J. 0. pole location (201/14) on west side of John Carver Road - 125 feet north of Woodland Street. No one present. Location granted. Received letter from Selectmen of Stoneham, Mass. , stating - there will be a meeting on Thursday Evening, October 23, 1952 at the Stoneham Town Hall to discuss the feasibility of building a joint Incinerator for the use of Stoneham, Reading and Woburn. ' Mr. Kilgore and Mr. Harrison appointed a Committee to httend. Discussed at length available laboring personnel in relation to manning equipment during coming winter season. ' Superintendent to make arrangements for hired equipment and personnel if necessary. Hearing at 7:45 P.M. on proposed J. 0. Pole location (81/15) on the south side of Scotland Road A feet east of West Street. No one present. Location granted. Hearing at 8:00 P.M. on proposed J. 0. Pole .locations (13/58 & 13/58S) on Charles Street and Dana Road. ' No one present. Locations granted. , Temporarily adjourned at 8:15 P.M. to meet as Board of Survey. -a- Reconvened at 8 :30 P. M. ' Considered request of Malden and Melrose Gas Company for gas main location in the southerly side of Bay Strata Road and in the easterly side of Haverhill Street (490 feet on Bay State Road westerly from Haverhill Street and 590 feet on Haverhill Street northerly from Bay State Road) . Voted to approve petition for location as immediately above described. Signed plan for location as immediately above described. Made telephone agreement with Mr. Joshua Day to meet with Finance Committee at 8:30 P. M. on Monday Evening October 27, 1952. Considered request of Malden and Melrose Gas Company for the installation of regulator manholes and vents in Haven Street and ' Sumer Avenue. . Voted to request repress ntative of Gas Company to confer with Board on the evening of November 3, 1952 at 7:30 P. M. Received petition f rom several abuttors on Woodland Street, John Carver Road, Winthrop Avenue, Hartshorn Street and Intervale Terrace, requesting better drainage in Birch Meadow Area towards Lowell Street. Taken under advisement. Considered 1953 report to Capital Budgeting Committee. Voted to file sheets as amended in lines 1,2 and 3 - items Water, Sewer and Storm Drains. Board adjourned at 11:00 P. M.
