HomeMy WebLinkAbout1952-05-12 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass, May 12, 1952 ' . The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:00 P.M. Chairman Hopkins, Messrs. Harrison, Kilgore, Walker and Superintendent Welch were present. . Mr. Walker acted as Secretary. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Voted permission to Superintendent to omit attending the meeting of May 26, 1952. Received notice of ap-roval from Personnel Board covering several small increases submitted in late April. Considered note from Superintendent stating that time and ' date for the reception of bids have been set as follows: For 1952 Street 'Betts. May 26, 1952 7 :30 P.M. it Elevated Water Tank Foundation -- May 26,1952 - 8:00 P.M. Considered letter of April 21, 1952 from Selectmen relative to lack of Water Mains in Summer Avenue from Willow St. to Woodbine St. Voted to write Selectmen and describe conditions and necessary facilities. Received letter from Edward Munroe, 11 Spring St. request- ing that the sewer be extended in Spring St. to his home. Placed on file. Received letter from Edward Hout, 15 Orchard Park Drive, commending Department employees for good job done while installing his sewer house connection.. Voted to place on garage board.. -2- Received bids at 7:30 P.M. for One New Motor Grader. Voted not to grant any abatement on the Jan. 1952 Water Bill of Mrs. Estabrook, 125 Middlesex Avenue. Considered filed requests for Sewer extensions in order of receipt and voted to hold hearings on the following projects: Spring St. - Orange St, to Salem , Orange St. - Spring St. to Belmont Summer Ave.- Orchard Pk.Drive to Hopkins Deering St.- Dudley St. northerly to 16 Deering Received petition from several abutters on Lewis St. requesting that the sewer be extended in Lewis St. from West St. to County Rd. Placed on file. Hearing at 8 :00 P. M. for proposed pole location on the West side of Haverhill St. 218 feet South of Batchelder Rd. Pole 40/16s. No one present. Location granted: Voted following pole locations: Haverhill St. - East Side - Poles 40/6 - 40/7 - 40/8 - 40/9 Changed from t.of R. to J. 0. Considered note from Superintendent that three more employees , (2 Semi-Skilled - 1 Junior Clark) have resigned, and two employees (1 Rodman - 1 Draf9man) have been called for Military Duty. -3- Received letter from Personnel Board denying request of this Department that emergency maximum salary rates be established. ' Voted to write Personnel Board as follows: 1. Informing them of additional loss of employees. 2. .Acknowledge receipt of approval of small raises herein mentioned above. 3. Acknowledge receipt of letter denying emer�pn cy rates and express disappointment as to action, and reasons for same. Voted to advertise in Chromcile for employees to fill the following positions. : 1 - Transitman 1 - Rodman 1 - Draftsman Received letter from State Dept. of Public Works listing bids received for 1952 Chap. 90 project in Reading. Voted to award contract to the low bidder, A. Simione & ' Son Inc. at the bid price of $13,525.25 Received letter from Carl Amon requesting dates at Birch Meadow for the Softball League. Voted to grant dates as requested. Following Granite Curb Application received, approved and placed on file ; Hill-crest Motor Mart -- 85 Main Street. Received letter from Edmond Kennedy, 65 Wakefield St. requesting permission to connect a drain from his cellar to the public storm drain in Wakefield Street. Voted to authorize Superintendent to .issue permit if he deems it proper. Received letter from Lt. Wm. Hammond U.S.A.F. requesting ' permission to conduct truck radar tests on Bear Hill. Voted to grant permission. -4- Received letter from Charles Wilkinson requesting the Board to place filling on the rear land of Raymond Mann, 322 Summer , Ave. Request denied and Chairman to contact Mr. Wilkinson. Considered new proposed rule for assessing Street betterment costsoncorner lots. Laid on table. Considered proposed layout for dead and of North Street which proposes elimination of circle type turn-wound. No action taken. Board adjourned at 10;00 P . M. - Respectfully Submitted; S c
