Topics of Discussion:
1. Establish co-chair
a. Christine Lusk moved to have Eileen Manning be our co-chair and motion
was seconded by Erin Gallen.
2. Review and vote on minutes from the May 1, 2019, meeting.
a. Remove returning from#4.
b. Motion by Eileen Manning to accept revised minutes and seconded by
Erin Galen.
c. Noted that Annika Scanlon and Amy Ropple resigned from their positions
on school council after the May meeting.
3. Added to agenda-Review of School Council School Committee Policy
a. Question regarding community member-by law not mandatory
b. Needs a re-write and doesn't match the regulations(12 years old)
c. By law, is it the case that school council is under the school committee?
School council can report to school committee versus the language in the
School committee policy?
d. Ch 71 Sect 59c-Superintendent shall review and approve and review SIP
after consultation with school committee-contradicts school committee
policy
e. SIP due to Superintendent by December 1
4. Curriculum Update
a. Grades 7 and 8 Math
1. 2 units being piloted at each grade level (CMS/PMS)
2. Envision and Go Math

3. December meeting to look at data collected from forts filled out
by teachers regarding resources
4. Implement new resources January—February
5. Access to all resources for the whole year
b. Grades 6 and 8 Social Studies
1. Gr 7 not changing this year but has access to National Geographic
materials. Will transition next year.
2. Or 6& 7 Natl Geo training on October 29
3. Additional information
-online resources excellent
-real human experiences on display, differentiation, varied reading
levels, audio component
-more interactive
-students access book in school (same book for 6 & 7)

-Online resources with new computers in each room (iCivics—

-We the People (another resource using)

1. Upcoming PD next week/Oct 10 on Reader's Workshop
2. Follow up to Writer's Workshop training
d. Curriculum Guides
1. Middle school math, ELA, foreign language, science and SS will
work on these during department time this year
2. Similar to the ones completed at the high school
5. Discuss goal areas for 2019-2020 School Improvement Plan
a. Attendance
b. Restorative practices
c. Inclusive Practices/Differentiation(continued)
d. Math Practices work
e. Areas to improve based on quarterly data/MCAS
*Whole school goal on inclusive practices which will be tailored to teachers'
individual strengths and areas to grow. Mostly focused on executive functioning
skills integrated into all content areas. Some practices are specific to math.
*Restorative practices: creating a culture of communication to resolve conflict,
reduces re-occurrence of behavior, focused on respect, relationships,
responsibility, repairing harm—connectedness/accountability to school/classroom
community
6. Other: Next meeting will focus on draft of School Improvement Plan
