Reading, Mass. , April 1, 1946
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M.
Messrs. Davis, Brophy, Putnam and Superintendent Welch were
present.
Records of previous meeting read and approved.
Mr. Dwight Newman, conferred with Board relative to rental
of bulldozer at 1102 Main St. He will try to rent a privately owned
bulldozer to report back to Board.
Received petition from several abuttors on Harrison Street
requesting that the sewer be extended from Orange Street to opposite
61 Harrison Street.
Placed on file.
Received petition from Ralph Crosby requesting sewer be
extended in John St. from end of sewer at Laundry to 77 John St.
Petition placed on file.
Received petition from Linus Snyder reouesting sewer be
extended in Chapin Avenue from Elliott St. approximately 200 ft.
westerly.
Petition placed on file.
Voted abatement of $7. 50 on April, 1946 water bill of
Frank Brown, 309 Haven Street.
Following persons appeared before Board requesting extension
of sewer in Morgan Park, King St. , Hancock St. , and Glen Road.

Employees presented a petition signed by 26 employees which
is attached hereto and herewith becomes a part of these records.
Adjourned temporarily at 9:30 to hold meeting of Board of
Survey.
Reconvened at 9:45 P.M.
Mr. Richard Harris conferred with Board relative to possible
relocation of drainage ditch through land off Pleasant St. opposite
Hunts Nipple Factory. Several questions were raised by him and
answered by Board namely to the effect that if he develops land
the Town will not participate in cost of relocating drainage ditch.
Considered proposed Gas main locations at intersection of
Pearl St. and Charles St. Gave tentative approval. Formal approval
to be given after Gas Co. submits a formal petition and plan.

Voted to authorize Superintendent to purchase approximately
400 tons of special sand for filters at Strout Ave. Pumping Station.

Voted unanimously to grant increases to employees of Depart-
ment according to the following schedule:
SALARY INCREASES
Voted by Board April 1, 1946
EFFECTIVE BEGINNING MARCH 28, 1946 AND NOT RETROACTIVE
PRIOR TO THAT DATE
A. All employees, under 18 years of age, will be paid $.60 per hour
except during snow storms when the present rate will be effective.
B. All temporary employees now receiving $.65 per hour will be paid
$.75 per hour.
C. All temporary employees now receiving $.70 per hour will be paid
$.80 per hour.
D. All regular employees now receiving less than $.80 per hour, or
$35.60 per week, will receive a Ten (10) per cent increase in pay.
E. All regular employees now receiving more than $.80 per hour, or
$35.60 per week, will receive a seven (7) percent increase in pay.
F. The minimum rate for temporary employees , over 18 years of age,
will be $.75 per hour.
G. In all cases , hourly rates will be figured to the nearest full cent.
