1. ADVERTISING: John McGrath will prepare additional articles for the Comical and
Suburban News as events get"firmed up". John will also contact the Reading Churches to
determine whether they will make our"flyers" on Reading Community Day available to their
congregations. John will also ask the clergy and the Reading Fire Department if they will be
willing to"ring their bells"and"blow their whistles"to announce the start of the Community
Day celebration. The"flyer" is being prepared by Abby Croyle and Nancy Eaton. Abby will
give copies of the flyer to the middle and elementary schools for distribution to the students to
bring home. John will also talk to John Upton, Reading Cable,to determine whether he will be
willing to play the video of the 1919 (?) Reading Community Day on the Reading Cable
channel. John spoke to Joe Connolly and Joe said that the Cable articles are being run now.
John will also prepare a Reading Community Day `Proclamation' for the Town Manager.
2 IMAGINATION STATION CLE.ANiiF_Bob Salter was not available to update the
RCDC on the status of the cleanup of Imagination Station. However,it was learned that the
Meadow Brook Country Club cannot make their charcoal grills available. Also, it was learned
that we have to use gas grills for all the cooking(volunteers needed to donate their grills).
z RECREATIONAL SOFTBALL CAMEO: Although Joe Connolly did not attend this
meeting,he informed John that all the necessary field permits have been obtained. Further, he
will have softballs and other equipment available for the games.
4 CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES: Joanne Nickerson is arranging for guides to
conduct walks through the Town Forest,Xavier Property, Kurchein Woods(spell check?),Pine
Vale, and Bare Meadow. Nancy Eaton and Joanne will try to have some"educational"
materials on the Town's conservation lands available at Birch Meadow and the Library(get
these to the Library before May 27th).
5 FOOD AND FACILITIES: Charlie Graham informed the RCDC that Reading
Junior Women's' Club will do the"solicitation" for the pie baking but that the RCDC needs to
run the actual pie tasting contest(both John and Chip Hines offered to be"tasters"). Barbara
Smith stated that the Garden Club(25-30 members)will bake bars while the Reading
Women's' Club will donate 10 tins of Danish cookies. The RCDC then noted that we will need
utensils to cut the 25 watermelons donated by Chip C. We also need tables for the picnic and
other activities. All persons donating pies need to drop them off by 2:30pm. Barbara is
currently seeking donations of food and paper products from several local vendors. Abby will
assist in this effort. John will check with the Legion and VFW about whether these
organizations can donate gas grills, money or anything else that we might need/could use.
Lastly, the RCDC agreed to set a price of$0.50 for a meal of a hot dog (or hamburger),beans,
salad and a drink.
6 FIFi D DAY ACTIVITIES: Lorraine Dennis has delegated all field day activities to
"Clayton",a new YMCA employee. Clayton will attend the next RCDC meeting on May 2,
1996. So far, the activities include a 3-leg race, a sack race, egg on a spoon relay race, and a
tug of war.
ft+. / 7. MUSIC: Charlie informed the RCDC that the Barber Shop Quartet is interested in
performing and they will do it for free. But, not all members have agreed as yet.
8. DONATIONS: Camille Anthony will have to brief the RCDC about how the
Committee can solicit donations. Chip Hines offered$100 from the Democratic and $100 from
his Election Committee. Camille needs to tell Chip who to make the checks out to. Camille
also needs to talk to Brad Jones to see if he can get the Republican and his Election Committees
to offer a similar donation as Chip Hines. Camille will prepare a letter to all the local volunteer
organizations and businesses soliciting funds. Nancy will assist Camille in this effort. Joe
Connolly will try to find out where the Dunk Tank is from the Summerfest Committee. If we
obtain use of the tank, we could raise money by dunking some of our more notorious citizens,
Le., Selectmen, School Committee, etc.
9 INVOLVED ORGANIZATIONS: Camille Anthony to contact the Rotary and
Chamber of Commerce about possible involvement.
10. MIs.TUFF: The Town Clerk needs to be made aware of when the RCDC
meetings are held in order to answer telephone inquiries from citizens interested in attending.
The next meeting of the RCDC will be same time and place on May 2. Chip Hines will speak
to his Father about parking at Birch Meadow on the day of the grand event. Also,we should
issue passes to the RCDC so they can park close to where they need to be. We also need to
solicit volunteers to sell tickets for the food/picnic.
