HomeMy WebLinkAbout1944-06-05 Board of Public Works Minutes z . Reading, Mass. , June 5, 1944 EThe regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Messrs. Davis, Lindsay, Putnam, Tear and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Mr. Frank Wheeler, Foreman of Highway Department in North Reading interviewed Board relative to rental of Grader during last two weeks in July. Voted to authorize rental of grader as requested providing workmen are sober at all times, otherwise rental ceases immediately. Voted to allow as many men as possible to take their vaca- tions during the two weeks , July 15 to July 29, 1944. Received letter from Andrew Ceader, Park St. , North Reading, offering $25.00 for old Water Dept. Fordson Tractor. Voted to sell Tractor for $25.00. Voted to authorize Superintendent to hire female steno- grapher and clerk to replace Mrs . Taylor who resigned. Voted to set hourly rate for compressor operator at a figure which will be 15 cents per hour more than the highest rate paid temporary laborers. Voted to underwrite a field day on Washington Street Park on July 4, 1944. Cost not to exceed $75.00. Program to be under the supervision of James Putnam. Received letter from Arthur Hans , 298 Woburn St. , requesting that the sewer be extended in Woburn St. , so that his property may be connected to it. Voted to prepare a plan and hold a hearing June 26, 1944. 78 Voted to hold next meeting of Board on Monday, June 26, 1944. . Received letter from Frederick Withington, 683 Main Street, Malden, Mass. , requesting that the sewer be extended in Bancroft Ave. , so that property owned by him at 87 Bancroft Avenue can be connected to it. Voted to prepare plan and hold hearing June 26, 1944. Voted to hold a hearing for extension of sewer in Deering St. on June 26, 1944. Voted following pole locations: John St. - Poles 91/16 - 47/25 - 47/27 - 47/28 - 47/29. Changed from Town of Reading to Joint Ownership. Discussed water supply situation. Voted to authorize Superintendent to call a special meeting of the Board whenever in his judgment the situation warrants curtail- ment of normal water usage. Voted to increase hourly pay rate of Harold McSheehy from 88 cents per hour. to 96 cents per hour. He is to be promoted to place of Arthur Lake who resigned. Board adjourned at 9:00 P.M.
