Reading, Mass. , December 20, 1943
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M.
Messrs . Davis, Lindsay, Lothrop, Tear and Superintendent
Welch were present.
Records of previous meeting read and approved.
Mr. Harry Smith conferred with Board in relation to renting
the bulldozer and compressor.
Voted to close Department at noon on December 24, 1943.
Received letter from Municipal Light Board offering use
of men and equipment during snow storms.
Received letter from Board of Selectmen requesting that
all budgets be submitted to Finance Committee prior to January
1, 1944.
Received letter from State Dept. of Public Health stating
that Federal Security Agency does not feel that guards are any
longer reauired at the Pumping Station.
Voted to authorize preparation of a by-law so that the
provisions of Chapter 125, Acts of 1943 will be effective in
Reading after acceptance at Town Meeting.
Voted to commit to the Assessors certain House Connection
Betterment Assessments, a copy of which is attached hereto and
herewith becomes a part of these records.
Voted to prepare a plan for making extensions to the
garage. Plan to include provisions for a new heating system.
Discussed 1944 Budget at length. Tentatively approved
1944 Budget as amended.
Voted to construct a terrace at the front of the filter
plant in 1944.

Considered request of employees to re-adjust hourly rates
of pay to reduce the differentials. Matter laid on table.
Considered request of employees for time and one half for
plowing snow.
Voted not to pay time and one half for plowing snow.
Voted to pay water department men a minimum of four (4)
hours pay for standing in on Sundays providing they remain at home
the Sunday on which they stand in.
Voted to hold next meeting on December 27, 1943•
Board adjourned at 10:30 P.M.

The undersigned, Board of Public Works of the Town of
Reading, in compliance with the provisions of General Laws Chap. 80,
as amended by Chapter 63 of the acts of 1933, hereby certify that the
list herewith contains the names of persons against whom we have made

betterment assessments , together with the location of the land bene-
fited by the improvement and the nature and amount of such betterment
assessment.
And such list is certified to you for the purpose of commit-
ting the same to the Tax Collector as provided 18 law.
