Reading, Mass . , March 29, 1943
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at '
7:30 P.M.
Messrs . Davis, Brophy, Lindsay, Lothrop, Tear were present.
J. T. Putnam acted as Secretary because of absence of Supt.
Records of previous meeting read and approved.
Distribution of W. P. A. equipment considered. Chairman to
confer with Selectmen.
Letter received from Selectmen relative to bicycle racks
in Square.
Voted to build one 10 bicycle rack near small common between
Lowell Street, Woburn Street and Main Street.
Voted to instruct Superintendent to investigate possibilities
of furnishing water to persons having "Victory Gardens" at reduced
rates during the coming summer without installing meters . Also to
try to devise some way by which ultimate use of water can be ascer-
tained (i.e. whether for garden or lawns) , and further to devise
a means of properly Adjusting sewer bills to allow for use of water
on gardens.
Voted to instruct Superintendent to submit a schedule of recent
salary increases showing that part of increase which will be permanent
and that part of increase which will be temporary.
Discussed House Bill 1334. Voted to record the Board in
opposition to this bill and to instruct the Superintendent to notify
Senator Coolidge and Representative Dickie, in writing, of this action
by the Board and to request their cooperation towards defeating this
bill in the General Court.
Voted to purchase a tractor plow and disc harrow for use in

plowing Victory Gardens and to authorize Superintendent to purchase
same at his discretion before April 6, 1943.
Voted to postpone action on reauest of regular employees for
a one-week sick leave with pay.
Voted to postpone action on request of temporary employees
for a two-week vacation with pay.
Voted to install storm drains in Temple Street and Wescroft
Park during 1943.
Following pole locations granted:
Haverhill St. - Poles 40/45 to 40/55 inclusive and
Poles 40/57 to 4o/63 inclusive changed
from T of R to J.O.
Board adjourned at 9:15 P.M.
