Reading, Mass. , December 12, 1949
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M.
Chairman Calvin, Donahue, Putnam, Walker and Superintendent
Welch were present.
Received letter from North Reading Sanitarium asking if this
Department could install services from existing water mains to new
housing units.
Voted to reply that the Department is not in a position to
do that work.
Voted following pole locations:
Longfellow Road - Pole 188/5 moved 13 feet northerly
Temporarily adjourned at 8:00 P .M. to meet as Board of Survey.
Reconvened at 8:30 P.M.
Received letter from B & M R.R. requesting an abatement on
their October, 1949, water bill for the Roundhouse on Hancock Street.
Voted to abate $38.00 on the bill.
Received petition from several abuttors on Indiana Avenue,
requesting that this street be accepted as a public way.
Placed on file for future action.
Received petition from several abuttors on Scotland Road
requesting that the sewer be extended from Howard Street through
Sigsbee Avenue to Scotland Road..
Placed on file for future action.
Received letter from Selectmery relative to combined purchase
of heating oils by all departments.
Voted to agree, in general, to combined purchases but to
request further detailed information.

Signed Commitment Sheets for 1949 Sidewalk Construction
Assessments and 191+9 Sewer Frontage Assessments. '
Voted to hold Special Board Meeting Thursday, December 15,
1949 for Budget consideration only.
Discussed reasons for installation of a 40-hour week.
Voted to send same to Personnel Board.
Discussed, at length, the financial problem of the .Water
Department.
It was moved, seconded and unanimously voted to amend the
Rules and Regulations of the Water Department as follows:
Strike out Sect. 19B and substitute therefore the
following:
Sect. 19B. Before any extension of a water main is
made, the applicant shall pay to the Town in advance, in
cash, the sum of Two Dollars and Fifty Cents ($2. 50) for ,
each running foot of such extension.
Board adjourned 10:15 P.M. .
