HomeMy WebLinkAbout1949-11-14 Board of Public Works Minutes ITT Reading, Mass . , November 14, 1949 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Chairman Calvin, Messrs. Donahue, Harrison, Putnam, Walker, and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Received letter from Mass. State Dept. Public Works stating that they have increased the State Charles St. Chap. 90 Allotment by $1, 500.00. Temporarily adjourned 'at 7:45 P.M. to meet as Board of Survey. Reconvened at 8:00 P.M. Hearing at 8:00 P.M. on proposed sewer extension in West St. from Woburn St. to opposite Wescroft Road. No one present. Voted to make extension as described above. Hearing at 8:15 P.M. on proposed pole location as follows: Pearl St. -. West Side - near Willard Rd. - Pole 70/53 moved 60 feet northerly Received notice from Selectmen requesting that all 1950 Budgets be submitted by December 15, 1949. Received letter from J. F. Sawyer, 8 Arlington St. , request- ing that leaves be removed from Lincoln St. Voted not to remove leaves as requested. Mr. Chester Putnam and Mr. Ernest Watson, both foremen in this Department conferred with Board and presented a petition relative to salaries for foremen. Voted to submit a petition to the Personnel Board requesting that foremen be paid overtime at certain stated periods . Mr. Dominic Zanni conferred with Board requesting primarily 172 that one of his trucks be assigned a snow plow route for the coming winter after which he branched out on a rambling inclusive criticism , of the entire department including design, operation, supervision and construction and, in general, the overall efficiency of the Department on any particular project. Considered and discussed letters to and from the Selectmen relative to swimming pool costs . Voted to extend the sick leave of Harold Abbott two weeks or until November 22, 1949. Received request from a Mr. Maynard Norwood, 570 Pearl St. requesting that a line wall be removed from in front of the new house he is building at 570 Pearl St. Voted not to remove line wall as requested. Considered snow plowing problems for the coming winter season , and the number of privately owned truck units and tractor units to be hired. Voted to continue to hire the same number of truck and tractor units as were hired in the 1948-1949 season and to continue to hire the same units from the same owners. _ Received letter from Town Counsel stating that it is his opinion that a proposed future street is not dedicated for street purposes even when included in the approved layout and description unless and until it further becomes opened for public travel. Following Granite Curbing applications received, approved, and placed on file: Richmond Bostwick 29 Oak St. - Hillcrest Rd. frontage ' Albert Ness 143 Prospect Street Approved proposed underground conduit location for Municipal Light Board in Woburn St. from opposite the Congregational Church to opposite the Public Library. Voted following pole locations: ' Bancroft Ave. - East Side - Pole 24/2 - changed, from J. 0. to N.E. T & T Co. Main St. - East Side - Pole 54/157 - moved feet Southerly Voted to abate the sum of $25.00 on the November, 1949, sewer bill of J. J. Robbins, Co. 335 Main St. Received notices from Finance Committee approving transfers from Reserve Fund as follows : $500.00 to Sidewalk Acct. ($400.00 Salaries - $100.00 Exp. ) $800.00 to House Conn. Acct. ($800.00 Salaries) $237.60 to Dumps ($237.60 Salaries) Received petition from several abuttors on Winslow Road requesting that the said road be accepted as a public way. Placed on file.
