HomeMy WebLinkAbout1949-10-24 Board of Public Works Minutes 168 Reading, Mass. , October 24, 1949 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at , 7:30 P.M. Chairman Calvin, Messrs . Donahue, Harrison, Walker and Super- intendent Welch were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Received notice of hearing by State Department Public Works on Chapter 90 Matters in Cambridge on October 26, 1949. Voted to ask for funds for Charles St. and for Maintenance in 1950. Mr. Allan Lantz of Hartshorn St. conferred with Board request- ing an explanation of the 4% guarantee for water main extensions . Received letter from Brendan Hoyt, 46 Pleasant St. request- ing that the new house he is building at the corner of Woburn St. , and West St. be connected with the sewer. Voted to hold ahearing for an extension in West St. and then connect property to existing manhole at the intersection of West St. and Woburn Street. Received letter from School Committee requesting Board to include in the 1950 Budget an item for the installation of granite curbs and granolithic sidewalks around the new Eaton primary school. Received letter from Finance Committee. stating that they will meet Monday, October 2.4, 1949, and reauesting the Board to meet with them at 8:15 P.M. Received notice from Selectmen stating that there will be a special Town Meeting on December 5, 1949. ' Voted to insert Articles in Warrant requesting the..following transfers: 169 A. - $1, 500 from the Road Machinery Fund to the Road Machinery Operating Account B. - $22'000 from 1949 Water Construction Salaries to 1� 9 Water Construction Expenses C. - $ 739.38 from 1949 Chap. 90 Lowell St. to 1949 Chap. 90 Charles St. D. - $2,000 from various accounts to the Snow & Ice Account. Conferred with Finance Committee relative to the following requests for transfers from the Reserve Fund : A. - $237.60 to the Dump Account B. - $600.00 to the House Conn. Account C. - $700.00 to the Sidewalk Account Received letter from Mrs . Mary Condon, 196 West Street requesting that the water service to her house be replaced with a new service. Voted to replace service as soon as possible. Considered following requests for abatements on water bills and took following action: H. V. Palmer 81 Prospect St. - Abated $8.00 Carl Erlander - - 58 Colburn Rd. - No abatement J. J. Robbins Co. - 335 Main St. - No abatement Robert Parry. - 28 Puritan Rd. - Abated $6.00 J. W. Henderson - 213 Pleasant St. - Abated $9.00 Following Granite Curb applications received, approved, and placed on file: Ethel Hodgkins 8 Springvale Road Received letter from Town Counsel containing opinion relative to land set aside on Board of Survey Plans for future street purposes. He rules that such land remains privately owned until such way has been opened for public travel and the layout approved by the Board of Survey. This is in a case where the proposed future street layout ' has not been shown on the plan as part of the proposed layout and has not been included in the description. 170 Voted to request opinion from Town Counsel as to whether or not a proposed future street shown on a plan would be forever dedi- cated to street purposes if the layout was included in the approved plan and if the layout was included in the description of the approved plan.
