HomeMy WebLinkAbout1949-04-04 Board of Public Works Minutes I7: Reading, Mass. , April 4, 1949 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Chairman Calvin, Messrs . Donahue, Harrison, Putnam, Walker and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved as corrected. Received letter from Wakefield Water Dept. requesting per- mission to extend the existing water service to the Garage at Camp Curtis Guild to a new repair shop which is in Reading. Permission granted. Considered purchase of equipment as voted at the Town Meeting. Superintendent to prepare and submit specifications for equip- ment. The new coupe and pick-up truck are to be purchasedon invita- tion bids and all other equipment by advertised bids. Voted to hold meetings of the Board on April 11, 18, 25, and May 2, 9, and 16. Voted to purchase a cast stone drinking fountain for the Common at a cost of $150.00. Received letter from St. Agnes C.Y.O. requesting permission to play baseball on Washington St. Park two nights each week and on alternate Sunday afternoons. Voted permission for Monday and Friday nights and for alter- nate Sunday afternoons. Received letter from Reading Cardinals requesting permission 1 to play baseball on Washington St. Park. Laid on table. Following Granolithic Sidewalk applications received, approved, and placed on file: _ 128 Anthony Cioto 118 Hopkins Street James Rogan 83 Grand Street Received letter from Philip Althoff, Faculty Manager, R.H.S. requesting permission to play baseball on Washington St. Park on various dates. Permission granted. Received letter from Mrs . Viola P. Woodward requesting per- mission for the Mt:. Holyoke Alumnae to sell flower "flats" on the Reading Common on May 21, 1949. Permission granted. Received letter from Wendell Newell, 12 Wends St. , requesting that the 1J" main in Wends St. be replaced with a larger main. Placed on file. Voted to abate the sum of $3.00 on the October, 1948, water , bill of Charles Tasney, 10 Gould Street. Received letter from Charles Wilkinson, Chairman, Official Board of Old South Methodist Church requesting change in grade for driveway. entrance off Salem Street Superintendent will investigate. Received letter from Selectmen relative to fires at Town Dump and installation of a large main and hydrant in dump. Taken under consideration. Received letter from Selectmen relative to the complaint received from Mr. George Taber anent drainage conditions on Pearl St. near Bowder Meadow. Voted to suggest a joint meeting of both Boards and the Town Counsel and the Building Inspector. , Received letter from William Callahan, Commr. State Department of Public Works to the effect that Chapter 90 fobs costing less than 825,000 will be done by force account in 1949. Received letters from Gordon Paul and Natalie Stark relative to drainage conditions at the corner of Scotland Road and Sigsbee Avenue. Voted to correct conditions when finances permit. Received petition from tro abuttors on Haven Street requesting that the sewer be extended to their property. Placed on file. Signed two copies of Order of Taking for Willard Road.
