HomeMy WebLinkAbout1949-02-28 Board of Public Works Minutes 122 Reading, Mass. , February 28, 1949 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Chairman Putnam, Messrs. Webb, Calvin and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Mr. C. Edward Parker, 57 Pine Ridge Road, conferred with Board to request permission to connect a drain from his cellar to the public storm drain in Pine Ridge Road. Voted to authorize Superintendent to issue a permit providing that a survey shows that the connection can be properly made and providing further that Mr. Parker signs a Release from Damages in favor of the Town and that the drain be installed according to Departmental regulations. Received petition from several abuttors on Indiana Avenue requesting the Board to refrain from recommending to the Town the acceptance of Indiana Avenue as a public way. Voted to rescind the motion of February 14, 1948, recommend- ing to the Town the acceptance of Indiana Avenue as a public way. Hearing at 8:00 P.M. on proposed acceptance as a public way of a portion of Dustin Road from Sta. 0 + 00 to Ste. 4 + 30. The following persons conferred with the Board relative to the proposed acceptance of Indiana Avenue as a public way: Elizabeth Hardy Frank Hardy George Elbaum - Lewis Hamlin Alice Hamlin Frank Elwell, Jr. Eugene Hayward Mildred Barton - Mary Mullen Daniel Mullen, Jr. After a prolonged discussion the Board agreed to call a formal advertised hearing to reconsider the proposed acceptance on the evening of March 14, 1949, at 8:15 P.M. Mr. Ray Richardson, 35 Pine Ridge Road, conferred with Board renuesting that the Board extend the storm drain in Pine Ridge Road approximately 200 ft. so that he can connect a drain to his cellar. It was suggested that he contact' Mr. Floyd of 32 Pine Ridge Road and secure permission to connect his proposed cellar drain to the present drain from Mr. Floyd's house. He agreed to do so. Voted to approve the recommendation of the Superintendent appointing Miss Ellen Wiberg as a Junior Clerk at a salary of $30.00 per week to replace Miss Dorothy Gonzalo who is resigning. Voted to start billing home owners for sewer rentals not more than one year after the house connection is installed. Voted to abate the sum of $102.16 on the advance payment made by Fred Douglass, Jr. , for the main pipe extension to his new ' house on South Street in Wakefield. Voted to authorize the Superitintendent to purchase a salt spreader for the sum of $550.00 plus freight. - L24 Voted the following abatements on sewer frontage assessments placed in 1948: William Pierpont - 94 Salem St. - Pearl St. Frontage . . . . .$80.00 Reading Antiquarian Society - 99 Washington St. . . . . . . . . . . 70.00 Frederick Johnson - 32 Prescott St.-Wash.St. Frontage. . . . . 54.33 Martin Halloran - 22 Prescott St.-Washington Frontage. . . . . 62.6'7 Voted to give permission to the American Red Cross to install a sign on the Common at the corner of Main St. and Lowell St. Voted to recommend to the Town the acceptance of a portion of Dustin Road from Sta. 9 + 00 to Ste. 4 + 30 as a public way. Refer to Plan A-13-61. Received letter from the Personnel Board approving the proposed salary schedule as submitted with one exception. Received notice from Personnel Board stating that holiday pay should be paid only to permanent employees. Superintendent reported that after the receipt of this notice he had contacted Mr. Harold Jones, the Chairman of the Personnel Board and that Mr. Jones had agreed to allowing the present method of Holiday pay as established by the Board to remain in effect until a clarifying amendment to the rules can be drawn and presented to the Town Meeting. In honor of Mr. Webb who was attending his last meeting of the Board, a light lunch was served and Mr. Webb was congratulated for his conscientious service on the Board. Board adjourned at 12:30 A.M.
