Reading, Mass. , November 29, 1948
' The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M.
Chairman Putnam, Messrs . Donahue, Webb and Superintendent
Welch were present.
Records of previous meeting read and approved.
Voted to approve actions taken at the previous meeting by
Mr. Putnam and Mr. Calvin.
Received letter from Town Counsel in relation to proposed
Water Department charges. In general, he states charges may be
imposed subject to whatever instructions may be later voted by the
Town.
Signed Pole Location as follows:

Run. Light - Pole Location on West Side of Vi}lage St.
423 feet north of John St. - abandoned.
Received letter from Selectmen requesting that 1949 Budgets
be filed by December 15, 1948.
Temporarily adjourned at 8:30 P.M. to hold a joint meeting
in Room 19 with Board of Selectmen and representatives of the
American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Following persons present: -
Mr. Putnam, Mr. Donahue, Mr. Webb from Board of Public Works
Mr. Wilkinson, Mr. Latham, Mr. Roberts from Selectmen
Messrs. Wilson Powers, George Dunn, John Kelley and
Austin Bennett and Arthur G. Rees from American Legion
Messrs. Albert Maxwell, Ralph Wilsoh and Fred Nyberg
from Veterans of Foreign Wars .
Mr. Wilkinson acted as Chairman.
' A lengthy discussion took place on the proposal to name
various squares and street intersections of the Town in honor of
members of the Armed Forces who gave their lives in World War II.

No final agreement was reached.
Mr. Austin Bennett, Jr. , Commander of American Legion, and '
Mr. Fred Nyberg, Commander of Veterans Foreign Wars agreed to hold
a conference on the matter and to contact fathers and mothers of the
deceased to obtain their views on either the above-mentioned proposal
or to see if they would prefer to wait for the time when a more useful
and elaborate memorial could be built.
Reconvened at 9:45 P.M.
Received letter from Joseph L. Thompson, Proprietor of "Sailor
Tom's", requesting that a berm be built along the north side of
Franklin Street from Main Street westerly approximately 600 feet
in the location which he has recently graded for use as a parking area.
Voted to write him to the effect that since he created the
condition he will have to correct it. ,
Received letter from Joseph L. Doherty, 11 Linden Street,
requesting that the granolithic sidewalk in front of his garage
entrance be lowered.
Voted to hold next meeting December 13, 1948.
Considered and discussed 1949 Budget.
Board adjourned at 10:30 P .M.
