HomeMy WebLinkAbout1948-11-08 Board of Public Works Minutes 99 Reading, Mass. , November 8, 1948 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P .M. Chairman Putnam, Messrs . Calvin, Donahue, Webb and Superin- tendent Welch were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Mr. Putnam reported on conference held with Finance Committee on November 4, 1948. Finance Committee has agreed to approve a hydrant rental of $15.00 per hydrant for 1949. Received letter from Mass. Recess Commission on Water Supply to the effect that a hearing will be held on proposed Senate Bill 417 on November 9, 1948 at 11:00 A.M. Bill is entitled "An Act Relative to the Development and Use by Cities and Towns of Water Systems and Sources of Water Supply" . Adjourned at 8:00 P .M. to meet as Board of Survey. Reconvened at 9:00 P.M. Hearing at 9:00 P.M. on proposed pole locations in County Road and in South Street. No one present. Pole locations approved as follows: County Road - Pole 135/7A -- on west side of County Road opposite the extension of the north side line of Lewis Street. South St. - Pole 83/31 -- on the east side of South Street 131 feet south of the south side line of Walnut Street. Conferred with Selectmen relative to following matters: 1. Naming squares and street intersections in honor ' of men and women killed in World War II . 2. Hydrant Rentals. 3. Clearing water holes in Town Forest. 4. Making dirt road to river in Town Forest. QQ Selectmen asked to call meeting of representatives of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Board of Selectmen and , Board of Public Works for a discussion of the proposal of naming squares and street intersections. Meeting will be held November 29, 1948 at 8:15 P.M. Mr. Arthur Aldrich and Mr. Charles Strout conferred with Board requesting that proposed water service to the Reading Lumber Co. be installed from Goodall Sanford Road and not from Bolton Street as previously ruled. Voted to install service from Goodall Sanford Road and to take a water easement for Goodall Sanford Road as soon as arrange- ments can be made. Received from certain abuttors on Thorndike Street petition requesting that the sewer be extended in Thorndike Street from , Pearl Street easterly approximately 300 ft. Placed on file. Voted to abate $9.00 on October, 1948, water bill of Leroy Frost, 258 Ash Street. Voted to abate $135.64 on April, 1948, water bill and $25. 50 on the October, 1948, water bill of the Fathers and Mothers Club. Voted to permit Mr. Ralph Sellars, 17 Vale Road to construct a garage over the storm drain and within the drain easement which passes through the westerly part of his house lot. " Received letter from the Wakefield Water and Sewerage Board granting permission to the Reading Board of Public Works to service with water the house of Donald Douglass on South St. in Wakefield. ' Received letter from Mr. Arthur Lord, Superintendent of Schools reouesting that special efforts be made to plow sidewalks near schools during the coming winter season. 101 Voted following pole locations : ' Pine Ridge Road - Pole 193/8 moved 25 feet southerly Village St. near west corner of Village St. & John St. abandoned. County Road - existing poles 135/8 to 135/28 approved This grant supercedes all grants previously granted. Board adjourned at 12:00 Midnight. Respectfully submitted: Secretary
