HomeMy WebLinkAbout1948-09-07 Board of Public Works Minutes 91 Reading, Mass. , September 7, 1948 ' The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. Chairman Putnam, Messrs . Lindsay, Calvin, Donahue, Webb and Superintendent Welch were present. Records of previous two meetings read and approved . Mr. Russell Carter and Mr. Fred Carter conferred with Board relative to the acceptance as a public way of a part of Beacon Street between Auburn Street and Elm Street. Agreed to process request in the usual legal. manner. Considered financial problems in the following divisions of the Department: Water, Snow and Ic9 Dumps and Road Machinery Operating Account. 1 Voted to submit reauests for the following sums at a Special Town Meeting of September 27, 1948: I. Transfer of $4, 500 from the 'dater Available Surplus to Water Department Materials II. A Bond Issue of $25,000 for the Water Department $10,000 for Labor and $15,000 for Materials III. A transfer of $2,000 for the Snow and Ice Account IV. A transfer of $600 for the Dump Account V. A transfer of $3, 500 for the Road Machinery Operating Account Received letter from State Department of Public Works approving work done under 1947 Chapter 90 Const. Contract. Considered general problem of driveway entrances for new residences and the recuests received by the Department to � .. assist builders in this construction. Voted not to do any work on these driveway entrances such as, the removal of trees , stumps, ledge, etc. 92 Received letter from Town .Counsel relative to request of Mr. Fresco of 11 Chestnut Road, that the Department build a retaining , wall and steps abutting his property. Town Counsel states that the Town is not obligated to construct the wall and steps. Considered matter of flood lighting garage. Voted to continue present method. Voted permission to Superintendent to attend the annual convention of the New England Water Works Association in New York City, September 14, 1948, to September 17, 1948. Mr. Donahue requested that he be recorded as opposed to this motion. Voted to continue salary of Harold Abbott until the next meeting of the Board Following Granite Curb Application received, approved, and placed on file: T. J. Coneeney 13 Temple Street , Received letter addressed to Chairman from Donald MacLean of Pine Ridge Road requesting that the Department proceed immedi- ately with the construction of the extension of Pine Ridge Road. Chairman will prepare answer which in effect will state that this work will probably be done in about four to six weeks.
