Reading, Mass. , April 2, 1948
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M.
Chairman Putnam, Messrs. Lindsay, Calvin, Donahue, Webb,
and Superintendent Welch were present.
Records of previous meeting read and approved.
Voted following pole locations :
Summer Avenue - Pole 87/39 moved 10' Northwesterly
Cor. of Lowell St. & Parkman Rd. - Pole 53/62 changed
from T. of R. to J.O.
Following Granolithic Sidewalk Applications received, approved,
and placed on file:
Joseph Doherty 63 Linden Street
Herbert Carter 55 Locust Street
Received letter from U. S. Army Recruiting Service requesting
permission to stencil sidewalks of Town in preparation for Army Day.
Permission granted.
Received letter from John Morse, 199 High Street, requesting
permission to use Birch Meadow on May 1, 1948, for a Boy Scout Rally.
Permission granted.
Received petition from several abuttors on Washington Street
requesting that the sewer be extended in Washington Street from
Lincoln Street westerly to No. 67 Washington Street.
Voted to prepare plan and hold hearing.
Mr. Arthur Bancroft, 63 West Street, conferred with Board
to request investigation of possibility of connecting Odd Fellows
' Hall with the sewer on Sanborn Street by way of the storm drain,
location through lands of the Sanborn Apartments and James Calvin.

Mr. Eccleston and Mrs. Boudreau of 218 and 216 Pearl Street
conferred with Board relative to drainage conditions on Pearl Street
in front of their properties.
Board will investigate.
Received letter from Mr. Joseph Reed, Chairman Building
Committee of Old South Methodist Church requesting that the present
water service be replaced with a new service.
Voted to replace the service as requested.
Received letter from Mr. Philip Althoff, Director of Athletics,
Reading High School, requesting permission to use the Washington St.
Park Ball Field for the High School Baseball Team for practice
sessions and for scheduled games.
Permission granted. ■
Received letter from Mr. Donald O'Brien, Athletic Officer, J
American Legion requesting permission to use the Washington Street
Baseball Field on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning April 20,
1948, and on alternate Sunday afternoons beginning April 18, 1948.
Permission granted subject to possible future change if other
applications are received.
Received letter from Mr. John Walsh, Mgr. , C Y 0 Baseball
Team, requesting permission to use the Washington St. Park Baseball
Field on Monday and Friday evenings beginning April 19, 1947•
Permission granted subject to possible future change if -
other applications are received.
Received letter from Mr. Willis Currier, 10 Vista Avenue,
requesting permission to connect an outfall pipe from his cellar to
the Town storm drain.

Permission granted providing the pipe is installed according
to the specifications of this Department.
It was moved, seconded, and voted to promote Roger D'Entremont
from a temporary employee to a permanent employee at an hourly rate
of $1.03 per hour and to promote Harry Evans and John Tormey from
temporary employees to provisional employees at an hourly rate of
95 cents per hour.
It was moved, seconded, and voted to grant a 10 percent
increase to all employees with all increases figured to the nearest
full cent.
Voted to hold meetings weekly on Mondays until June 1, 1948,
with the exception of Monday, April 19, 1948.
Board adjourned at 10:45 P.M.
