Reading, Mass. , November 17, 1947
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M.
Chairman Putnam, Messrs . Smith, Davis, Lindsay, Webb, and
Superintendent Welch were present.
Records of previous meeting read and approved.
Mr. Harvey Kelch conferred with Board relative to a proposed
widening on the north side of Washington Street between Ash Street
and High Street.
Voted to prepare plan .and estimate of cost and to submit
same to Town Meeting in March, 1948.
Temporarily adjourned at 7:45 P.M. to meet as Board of
Survey.
Reconvened at 8:00 P.M.
Mr. Robert Morrow and Mr. Irving Nesmith, representing
employees, conferred with Board requesting that employees be
placed on a forty-hour week and that overtime rates be paid for
work after 8 hours in a day regardless of total hours worked in
a week.
Mr. Harris and Mr. Swain of South Street conferred with
Board relative to drainage conditions created by the construction
of new houses on South Street near the Wakefield Line.
Board will investigate.
Temporarily adjourned at 8:15 P.M. to meet as Board of
Survey.
Reconvened at 8:30 P.M.
A delegation of four citizens from Harrison Street conferred
with Board, at length, relative to drainage conditions in the ditch
through Memorial Park which is in the rear of their properties.
Board will investigate.

Woodward Avenue - Pole 110/2 moved 5 ft. easterly
Received petition from several persons living near or on
Smith Avenue relative to the drainage conditions at the corner of
Eaton Street and Smith Avenue.
Voted to authorize the purchase of one typewriter.
Voted to authorize Superintendent to fill job in meter
room at a salary not to exceed $45.00 per week.
Voted t� employ, for a period of 10 weeks , a cooperative
student from Northeastern University. Work is to be on Survey
Party.
Received letter from ,Selectmen relative to 1948 Budget.

and placed on file:

Following Granolithic Sidewalk Applications received, approved,
and placed on file:
Charles Orrell 184 Bancroft Avenue
Clayton Smith 11 Springvale Road
Discussed at length financial status of Water Department.
Voted to request Finance Committee to transfer $3, 500 from
Reserve Fund to Water Department.
Conferred with Selectmen of following matters:
A. Closing Town Building on Saturday mornings .
' B. Declaring an emergency in the event of a snow storm.
C. Several minor matters.
