Reading, Mass. , March 31, 1947
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P.M.
Messrs. Lindsay, Putnam, Smith, and Superintendent Welch
were present.
Mr. Lindsay acted as Chairman.
Records of previous meeting read and approved.
Messrs. Nash and Whitehouse conferred with Board relative
to made pond at the corner of Charles St. and Pearl St. which has
been used mainly for winter skating and which has been emptied in
the summer. They wish to keep it flooded during the summer for
a boating pond. Since Mr. Nash owns the land the Board has no
authority except after any complaints are received.
Voted to request the State Auditors to make an audit of
the Water Department in June, 1947, or as near then as possible.
Following Granolithic Sidewalk Application received, approved
and placed on file:
Richard Chesley 50 Pratt Street
Voted to furnish the crane truck and one man to the Anti-
quarian Society at the Parker Tavern on Saturday, April 5, 1947.
Voted to hold next Board Meeting on Tuesday, April 15, 1947.
Voted to build the following sewers in 1947:
High St. - Mt. Vernon St. to Dudley St.
Boyce St. - Pratt St. to Summer Avenue
Summer Ave.- Boyce St. to #245 Summer Avenue
The following sewers will also be built in 1947 if possible.

Voted to allot $500.00 from Highway Account to Chapter 90
Maint. Account.

Voted permit to American Legion to play baseball on Washington
Street Park on Wednesday Evenings starting April 16, 1947, and on T
alternate Sunday afternoons starting April 13, 1947. 1
Voted permit to St. Agnes C.Y.O. to play baseball on Washington
Street Park on Monday and Friday evenings starting April 14, 1947,
and on such Sunday afternoons as can be arranged.
Voted permit to High School Baseball Team to play baseball on
Washington Street Park as per their previously arranged schedule
which, so far, is for afternoon games on week days.
Voted to request Mr. John Cullinane, Mgr. of Town Team,
Mr. John Widell, Mgr. of Legion Team and Mr. Clarence Doucette,
Mgr. of C.Y.O. Team to confer with Board on evening of April 15,
1947, to discuss use of baseball diamond on Washington Street Park
during coming season.
Voted not to make any abatement on January, 1947, water bill
of Bert Cleveland, 206 West Street.
Considered 1947 departmental salary increases.
The following details were voted:
A. Temporary employees now receiving 75 cents per hour
will be raised to 85 cents per hour.
B. Temporary employees now receiving 80 cents per hour
will be raised to 90 cents per hour.
C. All other employees will receive an increase of 10%
with the exception of the three female clerks in the
office who will receive a flat increase of $4.00 per
week each.
D. All increases will be granted to the nearest full cent.
E. All increases will be retroactive to January 1, 1947-
F. No retroactive pay will be granted to any person not
now employed by the Department even though he or she
may have been employed by the Department on or after
January 1, 1947.
G. Retroactive pay will be based on total time worked
since January 1, 1947.
