HomeMy WebLinkAbout1936-04-24 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. April 24,1936 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened t at 7:30 P. M. Messrs. Bancroft, Putnam, Lindsay, Davis and Superin- tendent Welch were present. At 7:45 P. M. Bids were opened for a heavy truck as requested. Truck-Four Wheel Drive Mr. Charles Evans of Martin Road appeared before the Board to request an abatement on his water bill and complained about the rusty water he has been receiving. -2- 4/24/35 A new waiver of damages was received from the Standard 011 Co, for the relocation of the corner of Washington & Main Sta. and the same was referred to the Town Counsel. It was voted to approve the agreement as to driveways, subject to approval of the Town Counsel. It was voted to abate the water bill of Charles Rorus 92 Orange St. Voted to authorize the .Superintendent to expend a sum not to exceed $95.00 for supplies in connection with the W. P. A. recreation project. A communication was received from the Planning Board relative. to re-zoning. A letter received from Mrs. Sarah DeMerritt relative to a recent petition for repairs be the sidewalk on Haven St. A letter was received from the Eastern Mass. Street R.R. relative to the condition of John and Washington Streets. Superin- tendent reports that these streets have been patched and will be more extensively repaired at a later date.- Board temporarily adjourned to meet with other Boards to discuss the merits of a municipal garage. - Planning Board and Electric Light Board were represented by Messrs. Robinson, Watts and White, and Johnson and Ellenwood respectively. Selectmen, by Mr. Leman, Mr. Morton, and Mr. Killam. Mr. Tirrell of the Cemetery Trustees sent work that they were well taken care of and were not interested. Mr. Johnson stated that he felt the Town should have a central garage for servicing, if not for storage, and felt t;at some savings could be made. -3- 4/24/36 Mr. Leman stated that the Selectmen had but two pieces of apparatus to be considered. - Mr. Robinson of the Planning Board stated that his Board was more interested in the location and type of building than the housing of apparatus. It was suggested that a committee of three be appointed, one from the Board of Public Works, one from the Municipal Light Board and one from the Planning Board, This was later put in the form of a motion and so voted. Board considered a request from the Selectmen to alter the grade of Willow St. and asked the Superintendent to advise the Select- men that the Board did not think it advisable to do this job under Town Meeting. Board later agreed after a conference with Selectmen, to hold public hearings on project. If done, Selectmen to pay all expenses, Mr. Bancroft was elected to serve on the committee to consider the municipal garage.. Superintendent was authorized to arrange for the purchase of a mimograph machine in cooperation with the Town Accountant and others. Board adjourned at 11:30 P. M. Respectfully Submitted: (Signed) H.
