1 The The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened
at 7:30 P. M.
Messrs. Putnam, Fairclough, Barnes, Fowle and Superintendent
Birnie were present.
Mr. Olson appeared to look over renumbering of Cross St.
The water bill of Mr. Borthwick was reduced by vote of
the Board to $5.10 in view of the fact that his bill was sent to
him originally in the amount of $17.00 and it previously had not
been greater than $5.10. No leaks were found in his house and
the drinking fountain in the playground was found to have some
effect on the flow of water.
Mrs. Mermet V. Dykens, Mr. Elmer A. Dykens, Mrs. Janet
Crouse, Mr. George Crouse and Mr. F. E. Carter appeared at the
layout hearing under the Board of Public Works for the acceptance
of an extension of Winthrop Avenue.
Mr. Paul and Mr. Charles appeared at the hearing on street
renumbering. Mr. Charles had some objections to the change on the
grounds that it was too general in scope. Mr. Hugh Eames also
appeared to support the policy of change.
Mr. Weston and Mr. Sampson appeared to make further re-
port on their investigation of our water system. Their recommen-
dation in short is to install an aeration and filtration plant to
eliminate the large quantities of iron now found in our water.

They have been requested to continue in their inquiry and to make '
preliminary plans and a fairly close estimate of the cost. The
charge for this preliminary work will be included in their 15%
allowance on the whole job for plans and specifications.
The Town Counsel appeared to present for correction
certain articles to go in the town warrant, one concerning the
change in the water plant and the other in connection with the
change in method of electing a superintendent.
Letter received from County Commissioners informing Board
of date of hearing on the reconstruction of Woburn and Lowell Streets.
Request received from the E. R. A. Administrator for rub-
ber boots to be used on ditch digging project at Birch Meadow. '
Voted to buy the number requested.
A list of water lieps was received.
A letter was received from the Planning Board stating
prices for the new map of the town constructed by their Board.
A letter was received from Mrs. Elbridge Teele calling
attention to unsatisfactory water condition.
Board voted to reduce the water bill of Mrs. Waugh,
7 Copeland Ave. by 50% rather than 33 1/3% as was formerly done.
Corrections were made in the petition to the legislature
for a change in the method of electing a superintendent.
Articles for street relocation were signed and made ready
for the town meeting, these articles having been omitted from the '
warrant last meeting.

Board signed approval to street relocation plan as
follows:
Lowell & Bancroft Ave.
Willow & West St.
Franklin St.
Grove St.
Winthrop. Ave.
Board unanimously voted to grant to the Superintendent
a vacation at his present pay extending from March 18 to May 15.
Board unanimously voted to petition Civil Service Com-
mission to hold an examination for Superintendent at an early date.
Board voted unanimously to give to Mr. Birnie the position
of engineer in the Water Department at a salary of $40.00 per week
' upon his return from vacation.
Board voted to adjourn at 12:05 A. M.
