HomeMy WebLinkAbout1935-02-01 Board of Public Works Minutes or Reading, Mass. , February 1, 1935 ' The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P. M. Messrs. Putnam, Fairclough, Crocker, Fowle, Barnes and Superintendent Birnie were present. Mr. Rooney appeared to complain of his water. Voted to reduce the bill by 10%. Mr. L. G. Hawes appeared to make a change in his meter connections to his premises on West St. The contract for gasoline with the Texas Co. was approved by the Municipal Light Board and was then approved by this Board. Mr. Willard who lives on Pratt St. came to request that his street be plowed out. He was told that it would be done Sat- urday. Mrs. Julia Noyes of Weston Road complained of sand in the water entering her house. Board voted to reduce her water by 10%. A letter was received from James td. McLaughlin express- ing appreciation for efforts of Board of Public Works in clearing snow. Voted to acknowledge letter and request permission to pub- lish it in the Reading Chronicle. The Sub-committee of the Finance Committee appeared at $:30 to confer with this Board. Q. Will your water supply at 100 Acre Meadow have to be abandoned at an early date? ' A. No. The trouble is in the line. -2- February 1, 1935 The Committee insists on placing all requests for specific new equipment in special articles. It was the opinion of those present that the Finance Committee would back up a $29,000 highway appropriation and up to $4, 500 for equipment. The Finance Committee is in favor of more definitely beneficial E. R. A. projects, such as pipe construction and side- walk construction in which labor and materials will cost equally. It was suggested that the cost of materials be met by bond issues in the same way as the Federal Government. A letter was received from Mr. Samuel Gottlieb concern- ing the case of Walter Anderson on Main St. The Board voted to refer the matter to the Town Counsel. The articles in the Town Warrant regarding the improve- ment and relocation of highways were checked over and made ready for presentation. A list of possible projects for construction with Federal aid to supplant the E. R. A. this spring was made up including the following: - Reconstruction of Mineral St. Bridge Relocation and reconstruction of certain streets listed elsewhere. Construction of granolithic sidewalk, Woburn St. up to West St. and Main St. from the Square to the Railroad and other streets listed elsewhere. Drains listed elsewhere. Oor -3- February 1, 1935 Finish wells as fully outlined. Finish water mains and replace all less than 6" lines. Sewer lines listed elsewhere. Construction of Public Works garage. Swimming pool and building. Ball field at Birch Meadow and other recreational facilities. The Town report for the Board of Public Works was presented by the Superintendent and was reviewed by the Board. Board voted to incorporate as part of the regulations of the water department the wording of the "Demand" notice printed since the January 25 meeting. Board adjourned at 11:00 P. M.
