HomeMy WebLinkAbout1934-10-26 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. , October 26,193 +. The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P . M. Messrs. Putnam, Fowle, Fairclough, Barnes and Crooker i were present. Superintendent Birnie was also present. A complaint was received from Mr. Albert Maxwell, Gardner IRoad, against his water bill because of impure water. Board voted to abate bill by 25% in accordance with previous action taken in similar cases. A similar complaint was lodged by Mr. and Mr. Atkinson of 9 Wilson St. and a reduction of $1.35 was made in their bill. Mr. Iversen appeared to request light on Grove St. and ' to discuss the contract the town has on his sand pit. He was in- formed that the pole installation awaits the pleasure of the Light Department Board voted to approve removal of New England Telephone and Telegraph poles on Pleasant St. as per request of Oct. 11, 1934. Approval was received from the State Department of Public Works in the matter of spending the balance left in the West St. construction account. Mr. Anderson of Anderson' s garage, So. Main St. appeared to discuss his grading problem. It was agreed that the Public Works Department made a plan of his property and buildings showing exist- ing and proposed levels in front and proposed changes in interior design, and in addition extimate of costs. _2_ October 26, 1934. Mr. Simpson and Mr. Taylor of Willow St. appeared relative to the widening of Grove St. The Chairman was obliged to attend a meeting of the insurance committee. Mr. Fowls acted as chairman pro tem. Voted to deliver to the Planning Board a plan of the proposed street from Woburn to Haven Sts . parallel to Sanborn St. showing all proposed changes and to do so as soon as possible. Complaint received from Mr. Pierce as to water bill. Board voted to reduce bill to $15.96, the minimum amount, on the recommendation of the Superintendent. Board voted to proceed to collect full amount of Sophie Chalfen's bill in spite of protests. The Superintendent was instructed to accept no payment of less than $1.00 for delinquent water bills unless the party is in very straightened circumstances. The Board voted to request Mr. Harry Smith to report at 7:30 Friday nights during such time as he is employed on P. W. projects. The Board voted to elect a member of the Board to contact the E. R.A. Administrator prior to each Friday meeting for the purpose of obtaining and presenting to the Board information concerning such E R A projects as effect this Board especially as to the number of men available for the coming week. Board elected Mr. Robert E. Fowle as the member of the Board to assume the duties indicated above. -3- October 26, 1934 Board voted to instruct the Superintendent to take 20 men from Birch Meadow to Washington St. Ball Field Monday Morning. Board voted to request the Finance Committee to transfer from the Excess and Deficiency Account sufficient money to meet this Board's insurance bills in E R A labor. Board voted to request the Finance Committee to grant a meeting with this Board for the purpose of discussing hydrant rentals. Board voted to pay insurance bills on E R A labor. Board voted to lay on the table the matter of removing 4% guarantee on property after sufficient users have become established. Board voted to call a hearing at 8:30 on Friday evening, November 2, 1934 on the matter of the proposed street between Woburn and Haven Sts.
