HomeMy WebLinkAbout1934-09-21 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. , Sept. 21, 1934. The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P. M. Messrs. Putnam, Fowls, Fairclough, Barnes, Crooker and Superintendent Birnie were present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. A hearing was held at 7:45 regarding the installation of a sewer at the Old Ladies Home, Linden St. Mrs. Libby, Mrs. Damon and Mrs. MacClellan were present. There were no objections raised and the work will be begun immediately. Mr. Luce, Mrs . LeFave, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Luce appeared relative to the acceptance of Colburn Road. They were told to con- tinue getting releases from abuttors. The matter of rearranging office equipment was laid on the table until a representative of the Elliot Fisher Co. could come before the Board. A letter was received from Mr. Riley regarding the water supplied to his swimming pool on Prospect St. The cause of the poor condition is a dead end pipe. The Board voted to install a 6" pipe on Longview Road and Palmer Hill Rd. so as to connect with the pipe in Prospect St. A letter was received from Mr. Riley requesting that the Town build a sidewalk and curb in front of his factory at 12 Gould St. He was sent a letter enclosing an application for sidewalk construction. A notice was received from the Finance Committee to the effect that a meeting of that committee will be held on Friday Evening, September 28. -2— September 21, 1934- A discussion ensued as to the relative all around value of a tractor and a four wheel drive truck. It was concluded that a four wheel drive truck would plow snow as well in the winter as a tractor and in addition would be infinitely more serviceable in the summer. Notification of pole removals was received from the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. The Board voted approval of all changes in poles to be made there. Board voted to place insurance bills on welfare labor on the table. Board voted to rescind the previous vote. Board voted to refer the above named bills to the insurance committee. Mr. Bryant appeared to consult the Board as to the progress of E R A projects. The improvement of the Washington St. playground was discussed. Mr. Harry Smith was consulted. Board voted to apply for a project to build a children's playground and a more complete horse shoe court and to relocate the baseball diamond. The outfield will be taken care of under a separate project. Mr. Kendall appeared relative to the development of a street from Woburn St. to Haven St. directly behind the business blocks on Main St. Board decided to hold a hearing on Friday, October 5, relative to the opening. of a new street as above described. The Chairman suggested a project in continuation of a former project for street renumbering. The Superintendent's report on the difference in income as ® _3_ September 21, 1934. obtained under the suggested reduction in water rates showed a difference of about $6,000. The Superintendent is to prepare comparative bills with relation to present bills of $3.00, $4.00, $5.00, $6.00, $7.00, $8.00, and also to take at random 100 water bills and refigure them on the new basis.
