HomeMy WebLinkAbout1934-09-07 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. , September 7, 1934. The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P. M. Messrs. Putnam, Fairclough, Fowle, Crocker, Barnes and Superintendent Birnie were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Mr. F. C. Garrick appeared representing the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. in the matter of removing poles on Haven St. He assured us that every ,effort would be made to have the poles on Haven St. from High to Main St. done away with as soon as possible. He agreed to keep Mr. Birnie informed as to the rate of progress. Mr. Lindquist, Mr. Hall, Mrs . Hall and Mr. MacMillan appeared at the first hearing under the Board of Survey on the accept- ance of Pinevale Ave. extended. All those present were in approval of the present layout. Mr. Lindquist assured the Board that Mr. Jesse Thorn had no objection to the suggested layout. Mr. Turkington of Locust St. appeared to request the Board to eliminate a bad drainage condition in front of his house. The matter was taken under consideration. Voted to put in the proper drainage as soon as money is available, which will probably be before winter. The Secretary was instructed to write Mr. Turkington to that effect. Board voted to hold over any action on the plan of Pinevale Road for one week and in the meantime the Superintendent will see that all the abuttors are properly notified. Board voted that the Superintendent notify each abuttor individually by letter of the first hearing under the Board of -2- September 7, 1934. ' Survey on the acceptance of a new street. Mr. Sias and Mr. Bryant appeared relative to lighting of tennis courts on Birch Meadow. Mr. Sias agreed to install lighting on the new court on the westerly side of the present courts with a meter which will provide light for one hour at the price of a quarter. Mr. Kendall appeared relative to opening a public way from Woburn St. to Haven St. to pass over the present location of the right of way from Woburn St. to Kendall's Garage. It was decided that the matter be placed on the table for a two week's period. A letter was received from the Town Counsel advising the Board that the town is not legally liable for the damage done to ' Peterson's cesspool. Board voted to contract with a builder for the construction of a cesspool at a location suitable to Mr. Peterson. Altho there is no legal obligation, there is a very strong moral one. A letter was received from the Home Owner's Loan Corporation asking the Board to wait two months on the bill of Harry F. Lovering, 209 Main St. Board voted to withhold action for two months. A similar communication was received from Mr. Henry G. Kinsley, 65 Linden St. Board voted to withhold action indefinitely. A letter was received from the Metropolitan Water & Sewerage Board in which they request that a card be made out for each garage connected with the sewer. The matter was turned over to the Superintendent A letter was received from the Merrill Fuel Co. offering the ' Board contracts for oil burner fuel at the pumping station and kerosene for miscellaneous purposes. Matter was laid on the table. -3- September 7, 1934• Mr. MacPherson Daniel appeared relative to the possibility of gaining permission to hold meetings of the horseshoe club in the lower part of the building on Memorial Park. Board granted request. A letter was received from .Charles Nickerson ordering water shut off at 96 Washington St. Board voted to collect $3.00 from tenant with understanding that a rebate will be made for the amount not used. Sidewalk construction applications were received from Henry L. Noonan and Carl W. Lougee at 10 and 8 Longfellow Road respect- ively. Board voted to do so as soon as money is available. A bill for $9.03 was received from C. W. Sweetland & Sons for engraving 301 letters on 11 cups on behalf of the Woman' s Club. In connection with highway construction on Colburn Road the Board voted to take the usual steps in the acceptance of new streets when and if the abuttors are 100% in favor of the new construction. A request was received from Mr. Althoff of the Reading High School for the use of the tennis courts. Board voted to grant him use of courts at hours specified one day on the courts at each of the town's playgrounds per week. As soon as the new courts at Birch Meadow are ready he may have the additional day there. Board voted to make the necessary changes in the surface drain running across Ridge Road parallel to Main St. at an estimated cost of $135.00. 3 -4- September 7, 1934. Board voted to construct under an E. R. A. project a sewer connection to the Home for Aged Women on Linden St. as per their re- quest. Pipe will run from the corner of Lowell and Linden Sts. up Linden St. to a point easily accessible to the house. A letter was received from the Kenney Service Station regarding the change in grade at the corner of Washington St. and Main St. , causing a dangerous sidewalk condition. No action taken. Mr. Leach of Hopkins St. has a dangerous condition where his steps come down to the sidewalk. The Board members are to look at the difficulty between now and next Friday. A map of a proposed new road off of Longwood Road was laid ' on the table indefinitely. The Superintendent was authorized by the Board to hire another roller at the market rate for use on West St. construction. Board adjourned at 12:15 A. M.
