The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
7:30 P. M.
Messrs. Fairclough, Barnes, Crooker and Superintendent were
present. Mr. Fairclough was elected Chairman pro tem.
Records of the previous meeting read and approved.
Representative Sweetser appeared to deliver a letter contain-
ing information on swimming pools.
The Board admonished the Superintendent to be more strict in
following up shut off notices in the Water Department.
Mr. Taylor of Bird & Taylor, Civil Engineers, appeared at the

first hearing under the Board of Survey on Pilgrim Road off Lowell St.
He had no objections to offer. Voted to accept the layout as presented
Mr. Harry Smith appeared to protest a water bill of $26.00
at 147 High St. In view of the evidence presented the bill was re-
duced to amount of his bill last year, $10.70-
A letter was received from Mr. Duncan Graham regarding
water bill at 54 Prospect St. , saying that water was not turned off as
requested. It was voted to reduce his bill to the minimum of $3.00.
The Municipal Light Board appeared relative to the resurfacing
of Haven St. sidewalk. It was decided to postpone action until the
whole Board could be contacted.
Mr. Stone of Longwood Road appeared regarding the unsatisfactory
condition of the cesspool on Mr. Peterson' s property across the street.
No action was taken it being the opinion of the Board that the
responsibility lies with the Board of Health.

No action was taken on the request for water service on Pine-
vale Ave, because of uncertainty in the lot line locations.
Board voted to adopt suggestion of Town Counsel regarding
collection of water bill against Mr. A. Newcomb, 38 Beacon Street.
Voted to place application of Paul Mich for sidewalk construction
at 26 Glen Road on file until money is available.
Letter received from Anthony Marinello, Malden, claiming damages
for accident on Lowell St. July 11th. Referred to Town Counsel,
Removal of Telephone & Telegraph poles at Washington & Main
Sts. was approved,
Light Department pole relocation at Lowell & Pilgrim Road
1 approved,
Letter was received from New England Telephone & Telegraph Co.
regarding telephone pole construction on Haven St. Matter was referred
to next meeting.
Letter received from Mr. Sabin, District Highway Engineer,
State of Mass, , regarding drainage along West St. near Reading Woburn
]Line. Voted to construct road without any more drainage than a first
class gutter.
Voted to construct West St. of bituminous macadam.
Voted to install six inch Main from a point on California Rd.
195 ft. to corner of California and Indiana Road, so that water may be
supplied to home of Mr. Elwell, Jr.
Voted to change the name of Third St. to Shipkin Ave.

Whereas after a public hearing, wherein no one
appeared in opposition thereto, and after discussion, it was
determined and adjudged by this Board that public convenience and
necessity require, that the name of the public way now known as
Third Street, be changed, it was, upon motion duly made and seconded,
Voted to adopt the following order:
O R D E R E D That the name of Third Street, extend-
ing 550 feet from Cedar Street to North Street, be and is hereby
changed to, and shall hereafter be known as, Shipkin Avenue, and
that such order authorizing such change of name, be duly signed by
the Board, and filed in the Office of the Town Clerk of Reading.
Voted to postpone discussion of lowering drain across
Ridge Road and Hillside Road until Superintendent pukes up estimate
of costs.
Voted to use steam shovel on West St. rather than gas
shovel.
