HomeMy WebLinkAbout1934-07-13 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. , July 13, 1934. The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P. M.- Messrs. :Messrs. Putnam, Fairclough, Fowle, Crocker, Barnes and Superintendent Birnie were present. The records of the previous meeting were read and approved. Mr. Taylor of Bird and Taylor, Civil Engineers, Medford, appeared before the Board relative to the acceptance of a proposed street off of Lowell St. near Dustin Road. The plans as drawn by the engineers were examined and some changes made. The Board agreed to hold a hearing and proceed in the usual manner. Mr. John J. Cornell of Franklin St. and Van Norden Rd. appeared relative to Van Norden Road construction as it affects his property. Mr. Cornell's residence is 30 Lale St. , Malden. The Board agreed to send Mr. Cornell a letter telling him exactly what is his assessed valuation and the amount of the proposed taking. It was voted that the bill of $2272.00 for the Diamond T. Motor Co. be paid in full subject to the approval of the Superintendent 1 after examining the truck. The Superintendent presented an estimate of $231.79 for the cost of the tennis court construction at Washington St. Ball Park. Voted to buy the tennis nets as purchased previously. Board voted to approve purchase of heavier net as bought by the Superintendent for the back stop on the new tennis courts. A discussion of Birch Meadow playground was held. -2- July 13, 1934. Mr. Menovitch appeared relative to the damage done his property when the brook passing thru his land was covered over. The Board agreed to look over the premises individually and report at the next meeting. Mr. Merrill appeared relative to the acceptance of Martin Rd. (off Forest St.) The estimated cost to each abuttor per ft. is $1.11. The Board agreed to give the matter its consideration if Mr. Merrill will get as many of the parties involved to sign the papers. Mr. Xavier of West St. appeared relative to installation of water service on West St. from Cottage Park Northerly to his resi- dence. When the cost of the work was explained to him he wished to give the matter a day or two of thought. ' The Planning Board convened with this Board regarding Birch Meadow Construction. The Chairman congratulated the Board on its good judgment in following the original plan. He reiterated his personal objections to a swimming pool. It was decided after some discussion to make the following proposition to Mr. Sawyer of 15 Howard St. regarding the installation of his sidewalk and curbing; the sidewalk be built and paid for in the usual way, the curbing to be bought by Mr. Sawyer and installed by the Town. Voted to install new water connections on West St. where road is to be reconstructed at an approximate cost of materials of $332.38. -3- July 13, 1934. Voted to install thirteen wells at 100 Acre Meadow to add to present system. Voted to pay labor .50¢ an hour. A list of necessary sport articles was received from the President of the Woman's Club amounting to $58.00. Voted to give the Woman's Club $100.00 for total expenses this year connected with the Park Administration. Voted to commence work in relocation of corner of High & Lowell Streets . Total estimated cost $422.92. A petition for sidewalk construction was received from Mr. Albert C. Maxwell, 18 Gardner Road and from Mr. Ralph E. Smith, 12 Auburn St. Board voted to grant both petitions . The road construction projects were looked over and any amounts left over were made ready for transferring. Voted to hire shovel and two trucks for a total of 7 days in order to clean up the heavy work on Van Norden Road and County Road. Voted to lay the matter of water liens on the table. Mr. Fowle reported on the connection of a sewer at the Hose House on Woburn St. Mr. Fairclough reported on the situation on Longwood Road regarding the cesspool of Mr. Iverson.
