HomeMy WebLinkAbout1934-06-01 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. , June 1, 1934. The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P. M. Messrs . Putnam, Fairclough, Fowle, Crocker and Barnes were present. Superintendent Birnie was also present. The records of the previous meeting were changed to some extent. Mr. McLaughlin and Mr. Phil O'Brien of the Texas Co. appeared relative to the gasoline contract and assured the Board that the owners of the local Texas distributor would receive benefit from this contract if signed only in that it would reflect to his credit as to total amount sold in this district, but not financially. ' Captain Hugh Eames of the Reading Fire Department petitioned for right to open Woburn St. for the purpose of installing a sticker in the Congregational Church Belfry. He guaranteed proper replacement of excavation and proper guarding of trench. Petition granted. The contract to reconstruct Main St. was awarded to Mr. Charles Capone of Roslindale on a unit cost basis, work to be begun on Monday, June 4. The Board voted to construct a 40 Ft. lane of concrete in the center and a macadam surface between the concrete surface and the curbs. A letter was received from Mr. Kenneth Young of 368 Haverhill St. threatening to take legal action against the town if his grievance is not adjusted. The Secretary was instructed to write the gentlemen ' a letter explaining that the Board gave careful attention to his -2- June 1, 1934 written request received a week ago and at that meeting instructed the Superintendent of the Department to call on Mr. Young in order to obtain a clearer understanding of his complaint. It was con- sidered by the Hoard better that the Superintendent make a personal call on Mr. Young than to send him only a letter. The letter which was received from Mr. George F.A.McDougall of 13 Village St. , Reading, at the last meeting concerning the rounding off of the corner at Haven & Village Sts . was set aside until the meeting ijext Friday. It was suggested that the owner of the property be determined and approached on the desirability to him of making such a change. The Superintendent was asked to investigate the condition of street signs and report at the subsequent meeting. A letter was received from Mrs. Wilson, 29 Center Ave. asking for filling on her property. It 1,ms voted that the usual reply in such cases be sent her. A letter was received from Harriett M. Drury and Alberta F. Drury, 8 John St. applying for curbstone construction. It was voted that a letter be sent informing the applicants that the application is on. £ile, and the work will be begun as soon as money is available. A report on the expense of drainage construction in Main St. was presented by the Superintendent. The matter of traffic regulation on Main St. was taken up. It was voted that the Selectmen be requested to make Ash St. from Post Office Square to its intersection with Main St. a one way street going South. -3- June 1, 1934. An application for the transfer of ownership of certain poles .located on Haverhill St. from the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. of Massachusetts to the American Telephone & Telegraph Co. of Mass . was received. The application was granted. A letter was received from Mr. Burton C. Berg asking for the Board's consideration of his application for the position of assistant athletic director on the Reading Playgrounds this summer. The Board voted to send him a letter informing him that as a non-resident he could expect no encouragement in his application for that position. A discussion of trucks took place. It was concluded that the Board could not act without more complete information as to the char- acteristics of each truck. . The matter was laid on the table. Chapin Avenue construction was discussed. No action was taken pending the submitting of more detailed notes by the surveyors. Third St. construction was taken up. Nothing definite was enacted. The Chairman agreed to see the Superintendent at a later date to discuss the details of construction. The matter of hydrant installation in the vicinity of the reconstructed part of Main St. was considered. It was agreed to make the installation as agreed at the previous meeting with the addition of a hydrant on the corner of Ash and Main Sts . near Post Office Square, to be connected to the 6" Main running down Ash St. The construction of the fireplace in Birch Meadow was dis- cussed. No conclusion was reached. A letter was received from Mr. J. L. Devaney, 14 Washington St. regarding the lag in the constructing of the tennis courts on Washington St. Ball Field.
