HomeMy WebLinkAbout1934-04-13 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. , April 13, 1934. The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P. M. Messrs. Putnam, Fairclough, Crooker, Barnes, Fowls and - Superintendent Birnie were present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Mr. Tanner and Mr. Coolidge came before the Board relative to drainage on the Junior High Field. The Board agreed to cooperate with the School Department in solving the problem. They also made a suggestion as to maintenance of the Town's parks and Junior High school grounds jointly under the management of the Public Works Dept. The motion was made, recommended and passed that the Public Works Department undertake the care of the Junior High School grounds as , long as Welfare labor is available for that purpose. The School Department agrees to pay for the use of a truck for one week to offset our expenses in caring for school grounds. A letter was received from the District Highway Engineer, Mr. Sabin, stating that the completion of Main St. reconstruction before July 1 is very doubtful. Matter was placed on file. Mr. Davis, the Town Counsel, came before the Board. He was consulted in connection with the Libby Ave. assessments and agreed to see Representative Mollie Sweetser. Order of Taking on Third St. , Ellis Ave. , Cedar St. , and corner of High and Lowell were considered. They were all approved. Also Order of Taking on Van Norden Road, County Road, Franklin St. , and Grove St. were approved. The first four named were ready for f IF- -2- April 13, 1934. signing but the last four will not be ready until the beginning of next week. A pole relocation on the corner of Village and Green Sts. was approved by the Board. The Superintendent's report on tennis court repairs was considered. In that connection the Chairman, Mr. Putnam, informed the Board that our usual expenditures for supervised play on the playgrounds might be borne by the Federal Government under an E. R. A. project. A letter was received from Chase, Parker & Co. stating that ten new shovels are being sent to Reading to replace the shovels with defective handles. A letter was received from the Emerson & Norris Co. re- garding drinking water fountains. The letter was placed on file. The matter of drainage correction at the American Gasoline Station on Main St. was considered. The Board agreed to increase the number of pipes under Main St. from 2 to 3. The Board voted to approve an Order of Taking, an Easement through the American Gasolene 011 Co. ' s property on the Westerly side of Main St. for the purpose of drainage. A copy of the Department's advertisement in the Chronicle for bids on tractors was shown to the Board. The matter of installing.a 6" water main to replace a li" Main on Gardner Road was discussed. No action was taken pending 1 -3- April 13, 1934• the receipt of a formal complaint. Mr. Dean's problem of proper fire protection at his residence on Pearl St. was again considered. A motion was made, seconded and passed that a 6" main be put in up to Mr. Dean's house on Pearl St. from Franklin St. The materials to cost approximately $600.00. It was voted to go before the Finance Committee at some time in the ensuing year and apply for a more nearly equitable arrange- ment of hydrant rental. The time was more definitely set at some time in the month of November. Permanent sidewalk construction was again taken up. An application was received from James W. Gillis and Helen R. Gillis. It was voted that work be begun on the John and Green St. drains at an approximate cost of $533.00. The matter of repairing the tennis courts was again considered. Tarvia B will be put around the playing surface of the No. 1 Court. Trucks were considered. No action was taken. Board voted to cut away bank on Grove St. at the property of Mr. Simpson. Board voted to hire two additional trucks. Board voted to shingle the roof and paint the water shop located behind the fire station. Board voted to adjourn at 10:15 P. M.
