Reading, Mass . , March 23, 1934.
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened
at 7:30 P. M.
Messrs . Putnam, Fowls, Fairclough, Crooker and Superinten-
dent Birnie were present. Mr. Barnes appeared at 7:45 P. M.
The records of the previous meeting were read and approved.
Mr. Herbert P. Hayward, Sr. & Jr. on Haverhill St, appeared
relative to the removal of a fence on their property; also said
that the grading is not finished. They admit that a wall had been
removed for a cellar and that a few fence posts were there before
the construction of the road. They would like to have the Town
build a fence and complete grading. The Superintendent was in-
structed to look over the premises and make a report next Friday.
Mr. C. B. Horton of 58 Haven St. appeared relative to
hanging a sign over his store on Haven St.
A letter of appreciation was received from Mrs . L. A.
Parry, 3 Orange St. thanking the Board for clearing away the snow
from her house at time of funeral
A questionaire was received from Construction Reports, Inc.
It was turned over to the Superintendent.
The cost of constructing Chapin Ave. as estimated by the
Superintendent was $401.00, or 32.1 cents per ft. of frontage.
The drainage conditions were discussed at length and an
estimate of drainage costs across lots and down Green St, was asked
' of the Superintendent for next meeting.

Regarding the complaint of Mr. Dagdigian, estimated costs �
on sidewalk and drainage construction from Hopkins St. to Hobart's
garage were received. Board voted to scarify Hopkins St. at that
point. Board voted to install sidewalk on Main St. from Hopkins St.
to Hobart's garage at an estimated cost of $43.25.
Estimate of water pipe construction on Colburn Road was
considered. Superintendent was instructed to inform residents of
cost.
A letter was received from the New England Telephone and
Telegraph Co. substantiating Mr. Gillard's statement at the previous
meeting concerning pole installation on Grove St. Letter placed on
file.
A letter was received from Fred F. Smith complaining of un-
sightly appearance of snow plows at corner of John and Union St.
Superintendent reported that the plows had already been removed.
The Secretary was instructed to write a letter to Mr. Smith to that
effect.
Water meter repairs were considered. Board voted to buy
sufficient materials to keep C. W. A. men employed.
Representative Mrs . Sweetser appeared concerning changing of
Woburn-Reading line. The Board came to an agreement as to the proper
layout so as to make a definite proposition to the City of Woburn
Solicitor.
A letter was received from Mrs . Earl Watson of Haverhill St.
No. Reading, regarding the improper drainage under Haverhill St.
near the North Reading line.

' Board instructed Superintendent to investigate and report at next
meeting.
The requested fire hydrant on Pearl St. near Mr. Dean's
property was considered and laid on the table.
Board decided to advise the State and County of the
vote of the Town regarding West St. and Main St.
Mr. Arthur L. Gray appeared before the Board relative to
the Board 's purchasing a new truck.
The numbering of streets was discussed especially in
connection with the streets to be constructed under the Betterment
Act.
