HomeMy WebLinkAbout1933-12-15 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. , December 15, 1933. The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 9:30 P. M. Messrs. Putnam, Hartshorn, Fowls, Fairclough, Barnes and Superintendent Birnie were present. The Records of the previous meeting were read and approved. The Superintendent reported on the water bill of Fred F. Smith property occupied by Frederick Donahue, Sunnyside Ave. , and property occupied by George A. C. Knight, Virginia Road, Cor. of Pennsylvania Ave. Mr. Donahue told the man who went to shut off the water that there was sickness in the house, and that he had paid Mr. Smith $9.00 on the water bill. Mr. Smith is responsible for minimum of $3.00, leaving Mr. Donahue owing $4.90. Voted to notify Board of Health. Secretary so wrote. Mr. Knight paid this Department $19.00 on his bill of $33.65, leaving a balance of $16.65 due. Voted to give him further time. He said he would pay balance when he could. A letter was received from J. 0. Dailey relative to his water bill at 53 Bay State Road, Reading. Voted to postpone action. A letter was received from Amos M. McLean, 30 Pratt St. relative to the condition of Vista Ave. Voted to have Secretary write in answer and inform him that Board will estimate the cost of improvement under the Betterment Act if he so petitions. A letter was received from Winthrop D. Parker in behalf of his father asking that a new proper wire fence be erected in the rear of their property adjoining Memorial Park at the corner of No. Main and Charles Streets. Board voted to estimate cost (and include cost in the 1934 Budget and so inform Mr. Parker. -2- December 15, 1933. A letter was received. from the County Commissioners relative to C. W. A. projects but the matter is closed. The Superintendent reported that Logan Dickie offered to lease his skating pond area for $1.00 if Board would improve same. The Superintendent reported on the drain at Oak St. Mr. Putnam reported that Mr. Cahoon said that Superinten- dent was cleaning the wrong ditch. Superintendent and Chairman are to view conditions Saturday P. M. Dec. 16. Voted to buy one new Baker Snow Plow costing $275.00 with hydraulic lift complete delivered and set up. The Town Counsel advised Board that we may not lease property without a vote of the Town but that we might assist to some , extent in Mr. Dickie's proposal: He advised us also that we may pay cost of survey of Ellis Ave. extension out ofHighwayappropriation and include the cost in the estimate given to the Town Meeting. The Secretary wrote to Fred L. Douglass, 125 Hopkins St. advising him of our receipt of his petition and that Superintendent has re- moved the rough material from the road. The condition of the road cannot be improved at this time. The Secretary wrote to Fred F. Smith advising him that Board is of the opinion that he has added to the stack of cord wood on Manning St. instead of reducing it, and asked that he remove it as soon as convenient. The Board gave further consideration to appropriations ' for 1934• The Board also reviewed Street numbering plans. Meeting adjourned at 10:23 P. M.
