HomeMy WebLinkAbout1933-11-03 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. , November 3, 1933• The Regular Meeting of the Board of Public Works was called to order at 7:30P. M. Messrs. Putnam, Hartshorn, Fairclough, Fowls, Barnes and Superintendent Birnie were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. Mr. DeMarchi of Haverhill St. appeared, objecting to a meter being installed in his house because he has to run a great deal of water. He was informed that an abatement would be made if the water bill is excessive due to foul water. Mr. Sawyer, Mr. CateandMr. Byram of Ellis Ave, appeared asking that Ellis Ave. be extended- under the Betterment Act. Board so voted and matter will be advertised for a hearing on Nov. 24 at 8:00 P. M. and be brought before the next Town Meeting. A hearing was held at 8:00 P. M. on a petition for the location of 6 poles i.e. Hartshorn St. from Bancroft Ave. Easterly - 2 poles, Hartshorn St. at Tennis Courts, 4 poles. No appearance, petition granted and signed by Board. The Municipal Light Department requests Board to put side- walks on Main and Ash Streets back in proper condition after their conduit construction. They agree to pay costs. Superintendent to get better prices for materials. A letter was received from the Department of Public Works notifying Board relative to snow removal. - -2- November 3, 1933• A request for permission to swing a sign over Main St. ' at corner of Washington St. by the $tandard Oil Co. granted. A request for permission to hang a sign at the corner of $38 Haven and Linden Streets was requested by L. M. Johnson and granted. The Superintendent submitted a list of water meters Just installed, 22 in number, dated October 31, 1933, to be placed on file. _ A notice of the Bankruptcy of Wm. E. R. Brent of Reading was received from B. Loring Young. Superintendent to investigate 1£ there is an outstanding water bill. A bill of $11.05 is to be filed for a lien. ' Board received a letter from Sanborn Hill Service Stations notifying Board of a satisfactory adjustment on a 36. a 8 tire and tube. Secretary acknowledged receipt of letter. Superintendent is to obtain estimates on cost of con- struction of So. Main, Lowell and blest Streets from State Depart- ment of Public Works. Superintendent to obtain bids of pipe for connection with the new Standpipe. _ The Superintendent submitted a plan of Manning St. showing that two stacks of cord wood belonging to Fred F. Smith are over the street line 8 ft. The Secretary wrote a letter notifying Mr. Smith and asking him to remove same. ' -3- November 3, 1933. The County Commissioners requested a letter from the Board saying that it approves the relocation of Haverhill St. as requested. The Secretary wrote to Mrs. Laura Gordon acknowledging receipt of her petition for alight at the entrance to Memorial Park, and notifying her that here is no money available at this time. Voted to have supervision on the erection of the guard- rail on Haverhill St. at 7¢ per foot. Superintendent reported that fence on the westerly side of High St. at the Junction of Vine St. opposite Mt. Vernon St. is to be removed and that a guardrail should be erected. So voted. Voted to charge $20.00 to A. F. Thomas, 39 Prospect St. , for cost of relaying sewer pipe from the Street line to house on account of pipe being plugged. Joints were lSid with cement. Voted to allow Welfare Board to remove dead trees, or trees that should be removed, at the Pumping Station under the supervision of Mr. Strout. Meeting adjourned at 9: 57 P. M.
