HomeMy WebLinkAbout1933-09-22 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. , September 22, 1933. The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P. M. Messrs . Putnam, Hartshorn, Fowls, Fairclough, Barnes and Superintendent Birnie were present. The records of the previous meeting were read and approved. A letter was read From the County Commissioners with re- gard to the David Schurman line of Haverhill St. enclosing a copy of letter which the Commissioners wrote Mr. Dean, Chief Engineer of the State Department of Public Works. Voted to change the line of Haverhill St. to a width of 45 ft. instead of 50 ft. Chairman and Superintendent to, see Mr. Schurman. Mr. Fred Nelson appeared. asking permission for Mr. Riley of Woodward Ave. to enter a catch basin in Vale Road for the purpose of draining his cellar. So voted. Mr. Riley must sign a release of damage in favor of the Town before entry can be made. A letter was received from the Town Counsel with regard to water bill of P. J. Holland. He has been unable. to collect. Superintendent reports thrat a fence 244 Ft. long around the Bogle and Ramsey property on Washington at the Playground will cost about $90. Voted to install. A letter was received from the State Department of Public ' Works signed by M. J. Dalton, S.C.E. asking for more speed in work on Haverhill St. job. -2- September 22, 1933. Town Counsel sent an easement to be signed by Board in favor of the Ace Art Company giving it the right- to maintain a building over drainage easement. Voted to have Davis & Abbott make a plan showing the area covered by their building. A notice of a hearing at East Cambridge October 5, 1933 at 2:00 P. M. at which time application for Chapter 90 aid should be made. Superintendent to make an estimate for scarifying and resurfacing West St. and present figures next Friday night. Voted to construct two catch basins and lay 15" drain pipe down West and South St. to ditch. Materials costing about $388.97. Board interviewed the Welfare Board relative to labor ' on Haverhill St. construction. The Welfare Board agreed to pay for 15 men in the pit and we are to pay for 18menon the road, all to be paid 30¢ per hour. Superintendent is to have a gas shovel do the excavation in road and use Department trucks hauling this material,- also use two loaders in Nesmith's gravel pit for the ensuing week. Mr. MacPherson Daniels appeared relative to the horse- shoe courts- in Memorial Park. He wondered if the drainage con- ditions warranted them. Superintendent suggested that a drain be laid to relieve conditions. - The question of the Grove St. layout was discussed.
