HomeMy WebLinkAbout1933-09-01 Board of Public Works Minutes ' Reading, Mass . Sept. 1, 1933 The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was called to order at 7:30 P. M. Messrs . Hartshorn, Fowle, Barnes , Fairclough and Superin- tendent Birnie were present. Mr. Fowls was elected Chairman pro tem for this meeting. Records of previous meeting read and approved. The water bill of Mr. Chester J. Wallace was considered. He claims Lawrence Parker agreed to pay water and sewer bills as part of rent. Voted to abate water bill of $10.70. Voted to take up car rails at junction of Washington, Minot and Lincoln Streets , scarify and lay down with tarvia on re- quest of R. H. Nichols, 8 Warren Ave. who reports several near accidents. Voted to relay 1-j" Water Main in Percy Ave. Estimated material $66.24; labor (regular men) $50.00. Total $116.24. Voted to erect 300 ft. of 6' wire fence complete $105.00 at rear of property of C. Ray Brown at Memorial Park. Mr. Andrew Christenson requested a reduced rate for water. He claims he can drill and pump his own water much cheaper. He was told that it is expected that next year a _possible 20 or 25% cut may be made. Mr. Albert Abbott, 69 Green St. appeared with regard to gravel pit off Haverhill St. , price and amount. He offered his ' gravel at 100 per cubic yard. He said that he was willing to assume the expense of the gas shovel work. He signed a temporary agree- ' menti however, agreeing to sell at 5¢ per cu. ft. Voted to have Superintendent open sidewalk in some places to determine the cause and condition of the drainage pipe on the west side of Reading Square, where property is being flooded. The children who have been under the supervision of the Playground Committee at Memorial Park have made a very beautiful picture which they asked Mrs. Gordon the Chairman to present to the Board of Public Works with their compliments , requesting that it be hung in the .Board office. The Board accepted the gift with much pleasure and voted to put a notice thereof in the Reading Chronicle. Mr. Birnie asked for two days more use of the Gas Shovel ' on Haverhill St. excavation, which was granted. The work to be completed Wednesday P. M. September 6. - Voted to extend drain pipe from Auburn St. through Town property to Federal St.- sous not to flood Mr. Emery's property. Superintendent reported on progress at wells. Voted to authorize the Superintendent to purchase a new car and to see what allowance fie can get on his old car. Voted to meet next Friday night at 7:30 P. M. and every Friday thereafter.
