HomeMy WebLinkAbout1933-07-21 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass . , July 21, 1933• The Regular Meeting of the Board of Public Works was held at 7:30 P. M. Messrs. Hartshorn, Putnam, Fairclough, Fowle, Barnes and Superintendent Birnie were present. Records of previous meeting read and approved. The Board welcomes Mr. Hartshorn back after an absence of almost nine months due to his serious injury, and trusts that he will be able to continue his attendance. Mr. Charles Gormlie appeared objecting to the legal fees charged against him for the construction of the granolithic side- walk. Voted to refer the matter to the Town Counsel requesting ' him to write an answer to Mr. Gormlie. Mr. Harold Currell appeared asking that the Board grant a permit for five weeks more use of the Common for band concerts for the benefit of the American Legion. Board to consider the matter later. A Hearing on the relocation and laying out of Grove St. was held at 8:00 P. M. in Room 19, Municipal Building. There were present: Mr. & Mrs. W. G. Sargent Mrs. Annie M. Wilson Mr. John Emerson Mr. Elmer Stevens Mr. John McLeod Mr. William G. Becker Mr. Fred Smith Mr. William E. Knox Mrs. Charles Simpson Mr. Angelo Zanni Mr. George McSheehy Mr. Harry White Quite a number of the abuttors signed the release to the Town -2- July 21, 1933. Mr. M. F. Charles appeared complaining of drainage conditions in the Square. Superintendent is to investigate the condition of the drainage pipes and report. A letter was received from Frank T. Woodbury, M. D. with regard to conditions on Haverhill Street. The Secretary acknowledged with appreciation the suggestions offered by Dr. Woodbury. (See letter on file) . A letter was received from Walter C. Conroy, Chairman of Belmont Water Commissioners asking if the service rendered by the Pitometer Co. of New York was satisfactory. The Secretary acknowledged the letter stating that the service rendered by the Pitometer was very satisfactory. (See letter on file) . The Board considered the protest registered by Mr. Springford of the Akerley Manufacturing Co. relative to the minimum charge of $3.00 for Sprinkler Service, and decided that the minimum charge was a reasonable one for all sprinkler services. The Board received a letter from the Board of Selectmen of Wakefield, Mass. , dated July 15, 1933, authorizing the Town to construct Drainage pipes in Haverhill St. and discharge surface . drainage into an existing brook, South of Bay State Rd. in location. Approved by the Supt. of Streets of Wakefield. The Board received a letter from Mr. Safford, Supt. of Schools in Reading, requesting Tarvis B around the Prospect St. School. The Secretary wrote a letter saying that Mr. Birnie would attend to this matter. (See letter on file) . Voted not to grant another permit to use the Common for the erection of a band stand to the American Legion Band for -3- July 21, 1933. E the last Friday night in July and during the month of August. Voted to build a total of 6 Horseshoe Courts in Memorial Park, all of which are to be lighted by lights and equipment furnished by the Municipal Light Department. This Board to pay the cost of the current used only. Voted to abate excessive water bill of the Sarah J. Bancroft Est. at 45 High St. amounting to $15.00. Voted to refer the collection of the water bill of Helen Nowell Michelini to the Town Counsel. Voted to continue buying 12" Plain Concrete Pipe from Wendell Bancroft & Co. G .30¢ per foot. Board voted to start drilling additional wells at the New Pumping Station, and to get bids for 2 1/2" Wrought Iron Pipe and 6" and 8" Suction Pipe to be opened August 4, at 8:00 P. M. The Welfare Board met with us relative to our use of Welfare labor. Four days Welfare equals three days on Haverhill St. The Board adjourned at 11:20 P . M.
