HomeMy WebLinkAbout1933-07-07 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. , July 7, 1933• The Regular Meeting of the Board of Public Works was held at 7:30 P. M. Messrs. Putnam, Fairclough, Fowls, Barnes and Superin- tendent Birnie were present. The Records of the previous meeting read and approved. Grove Street Hearing on relocation and alteration from 7:30 P. M. to 8:25 P. M. There were present: Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Sargent Mr. Chester Stevens Mr. William H. Becker Mr. John W. Emerson Mr. E. A. Lucas Mr. William E. Knox Mrs. Annie Wilson Elliott Street Hearing, Sewer Extension. There were present: Mrs. Mary Whittier representing Martha Babb, Addie I. Verne and Frank Webb, objecting to sewer extension. Patrick J. Long and James Bain, favorable. Sewer will not be constructed in front of the Babb and Verne property. Voted to construct. A letter was received from the Building Inspector of Reading approving the chute built for the First National Stores in the sidewalk in Reading Square. (See letter on file) . David J. Abrahams , Architect, and David Martin, Builder, appeared for Mr. Lester Riley for relocation of drain through his property on Gould Street so that a building might be erected over the present drain. They are to confer with Mr. Riley and return later tonight. -2- July 7, 1933. The Town Counsel feels that a new grant should be made and the old easement released by the Town in Town Meeting. Mr. Norman Haines, Secretary of the Planning Board, asked the Board if it would have a drawing table built so that the new map may be drawn thereon, at the Board' s expense. Board so voted. The Secretary wrote to the Sanborn Hill Service Stations, in answer to a letter notifying us of a price advancement, calling attention to the fact that the Board feels the prices for tires and tubes quoted to us in March should hold for the year. Voted to build three horse shoe courts in Memorial Park ' near and parallel to Harrison St. One court is to be built now and the other courts later as their use demands. Mr. Albert Abbott, 69 Green St. appeared offering a gravel pit off Haverhill St. at 5 or 6 cents a load if the whole pit were taken, or 6 or 7 cents for 5,000 yds. or more or $800 for the whole pit to be used up in two or three years. Mr. Abrahams appeared again at 11:00 P. M. and reported that Mr. Riley wished the Board to ask the Town to permit him to build over our easement. Secretary wrote to the Town Counsel asking for article, motion, etc. A letter was received from Mrs. Laura S. Gordon, Chairman of the Playground Committee, giving the payroll for the year. ' Superintendent is to meet State Engineer and start work on Haverhill St. Monday A. M. A letter was received from the State Department of Public Health advising us that an examination of the water in Birch Meadow -3- July 7, 1933. ditch will be made soon. Voted to buy one Bradley Street Shower @ $16.50 to be installed in Pool in Birch Meadow. An application from E. M. Halligan, and Catherine M. Haley, 3 & 7 John St. was received for a granolithic sidewalk in front of their property on John St. The Secretary wrote acknow- ledging receipt of application and advising that sidewalk will be constructed later if funds are available. Voted to have Superintendent investigate cost of an Electric Water Cooler. Voted to build 14 concrete seats, Wood costs $2.00 per seat, plus 1 bag of cement is total cost of each.
