HomeMy WebLinkAbout1933-05-12 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass . , May 12, 1933. ' The Regular Meeting of the Board of Public. Works was called to order at 8:00 P. M. Messrs . Putnam, Fowls and Barnes were present. Superin- tendent also present. Mr. Fowle acted as Secretary Pro Tem. The Board met at 7:15 P. M. and drove around town looking at various projects and improvements. Minutes of previous meeting read and accepted. A hearing was held at 8:00 P. M. regarding the proposed change in name of Fair Road to Torre Street. Pio one appeared. The following vote was unanimously passed by the Doard. Members Present: Harold W. Putnam, Chm. Robert E. Fowle A. Russell Barnes, Jr. Whereas after a public hearing, wherein no one appeared in opposition thereto, and after discussion, it was determined and adjudged by this Board that public convenience and necessity require, that the name of the public way now known as FAIR ROAD be changed, it was , upon motion duly made and seconded, Voted to adopt the following order: 0 R D E R E D: That the name of FAIR ROAD extending 724.95 ft. from SALEM Street to HARVEST Rd. be and is hereby changed to, and shall hereafter be known as TORRE Street, and that such order authoriz- ing such change of name, be duly signed by the Board, and filed in ' the Office of the Town Clerk of Reading. Superintendent reported cost of fence including gate to close opening on Leon G. Bent 's side of Memorial Park Tennis Court -2- May 12, 1933. , is $77.00. Mr. Bent was consulted as to the value of this addition and he claims it would eliminate about' £our-fifths of the tres- passing on his property. It was unanimously voted to install this fence. Mr. Henry R. Johnson appeared before the Board relative to why Intervale Terrace was completed without cost to the abuttors , while abuttors of Chestnut Road and Fair Road were charged for their streets under the Betterment Act. Explanations were given and he seemed satisfied. Mr. Edwin T. Kendall of Main St. , No. Reading, appeared before the Board and made application for permit for sign on pole at 210 Main St. This pole is in place at present, time, same being ' installed under permit issued to Arthus W. Webster and cancelled by him May 5, 1933. Permit granted. Request from Welfare Board to haul flour from Huntington Ave. freight yards to Reading. So voted. Letter received from Edward H. Stanley of Reading Baseball Club requesting the use of the baseball field on May 13th, 18th, and 30th. Permission providing they do not conflict with other permits granted. Letter received from Town Counsel enclosing copy of letter from Ropes, Gray, Boyden and Perkins which refers to unpaid water . bill of P. J. Holland. They request extension of time for payment until latter part of June at which time they will see that bill is paid. Extension granted. Letter received from Albert T. Murphy of 54 Pearl St. requesting extension of water bill until June 5. Request granted. -3- May 12, 1933. Letter received from Charles F. Spear, No. Reading, .requesting repairs to Haverhill St. Letter sent to them as per copy in files . Letter from M. L. King, 60 Howard St. together with peti- tion from residents on that street requesting the extension of drain from Sigsbee Ave. to West St. Letter sent to them as per copy in files . Board voted to clear out all rubbish and brush on back and of Washington St. Playground as requested by Mr. Daniel O'Keefe. Board voted to purchase oil requirements for coming year from The Texas Co. at .468¢ per gal. less 2% for cash in 10 days. Metal drums may also be returned for credit. Request of Mrs . Solphie Chalfen, 107 Columbia St. , Cambridge, for abatement of water bill for property at 33-41 Haven St. con- sidered. Board voted not to make any abatement. See copy of letter in reply on file.
