The Regular Meeting of the Board of Public Works opened
at 7:30 P. M.
Messrs. Putnam, Fowle, Barnes, Fairclough and Superin-
tendentBirnie were present.
Mr. William H. Nichols , 63 Prescott St. appeared relative
to drainage conditions thereon. (see card in files. )
A letter was received from George H. Clough, 50 State St.
Boston, in answer to a letter sent him last week.
Mr. Williams of Tide Water 011 Co. appeared relative
to oil specifications. Suggests three major points for consid-

eration. Pour point Viscosity at 1000 & 2100 Farenheit
Gravity, Flash, Fire, Pour poitn, Carbon Residue & Base,
Parrafin, Pennsylvania and mid continent asphaltum. General points.
A hearing was held at 8:00 P. M. in Room 19 relative to
the renaming of Fair Road. The residents suggested "Torre Street" .
Mr. Robinson, Chairman, reported that Captain Eames approves of the

name as acceptable to the Fire Department. Board will proceed with
a formal hearing. Mr. & Mrs . Alfred H. Parsonson and Mr. & Mrs.
H. Goodwin appeared.
Mr. Robinson suggests that the next street to be con-
sidered be Longview Road changed to possibly Mountainview Road.
Friends of Sophie Chalfen, 107 Columbia St. , Cambridge,
appeared relative to a water bill at premises No. 33 - 41 Haven
St. Cor. Gould St.

® Mr. Rigby of Cambridge appeared for complainant and
reported on conditions as found. Maintains that Mrs . Chalfen
has to pay sewer charges for a very large amount of water which
is used to pump water out of cellar and which is not discharged
into sewer. He also asks for a reduction of the water bill.
The Board is to view the premises and then consider
the water and sewer bills.
An acknowledgment was received from the Rev. Charles
F. Lancaster thanking the Board for the. use of the Ball Park
Saturday mornings and asks one afternoon a week from three to
five P. M. if possible.
Board to take this matter up next Friday.
_ Mr. Charles R. Herrick, 441 Main St. appeared relative
to driving new wells. He wishes to make a proposition later.
Board decided to hold a meeting on the renaming of Fair
Road to "Torre Street" on May 12, 1933 at 8:00 P. M. after a notice
has been inserted in the Reading Chronicle of May 5, 1933-
A petition was received for a granolithic sidewalk at
premises No 3 & 5 Grand St. and 56 Middlesex Ave. signed by
J. Earle Thompson, Earle B. Ordway and Walter N. Pease.
Superintendent to acknowledge its receipt and application
placed on file.
Bids were opened for 300 bags of Portland Cement.
Fred E. Smith quoted $ . 57+0 per bag to be taken any
■# time before January 1, 1934.
Wendell Bancroft & Co. quoted $ . 590 per bag.
A letter was received from Arthur D. Little, Inc. quoting

prices for tests of motor oils @ $12. 50 a sample with a 15% J
discount where 5 samples are tested at one time. It is suggested
that a viscosity and carbon test would be sufficient, this test
would not cost over $5.00 per sample. Also $10.00 for a gasoline
test.
A letter from the Meadow Brook Golf Club complained
of water bill. Board voted to rebate on 5190 cu. ft. of water
caused by meter running backward when water was drained.
F. Clifford Evans appeared relative to more Tennis Courts
and asked to have catch basin lowered at 40 Howard St.
Superintendent filed a report on damage done a garage
on Winthrop Ave. owned by Alfred L. Maggi, by blasting. Mr. Frank
L. Noble assumed responsibility and is covered by bond.
Chairman signed a petition for a joint pole re-location
on Fair Road near Salem St.
Also for 1 pole on Weston Rd. on the South side between
Longfellow Rd. and Parkview Rd. and for 5 poles on Chestnut Rd.
and for 1 pole at junction of So. Main and Ash Sts.
A letter from C. Quincy Ives enclosing $5.00 on water
bill received.
The use of the base ball field, Monday, Wednesday and
Friday evenings during the season of 1933 requested by E. H.
Stanley. Board so voted.
The Municipal Light Department filed a statement showing
savings made by the new 12 " Main on Grove St.
A letter was received from the Sanborn Hill Service
Station notifying us of a rise in tire prices.

Mr. Thomas Beaman notified us that he wishes to
have his granolithic sidewalk installed under the Betterment Act
at the estimated cost of $45.33•
Mr. Birnie reported that he replaced the drain in Prescott
St. near Pratt St. and that the adjoining property was immediately
drained.
Board considered water bills.
Board voted to accept check of $v75.00 from Freeman A.
Badley to pay for water as follows :
116 West St. Jan. 1933 bill $0:35
11 11 " July 1932 " 7. 55
118 West " Jan. 1933 " 41.00
118 West " July 1932 " part 26.10
Leaving $76.15 uncollectable.
The Honorable Chairman of the Board of Selectmen of the
Town of Reading appeared asking what progress had been made in
removing the boulder at the Willow St. grade crossing. He affirmed
that the report was satisfactory to him.
