Reading, Mass. , April 14, 1933.
The Regular Meeting of the Board of Public Works was
called to order at 7:30 P. M.
Messrs. Putnam, Fairclough, Fowle, Barnes and Superintendent
Birhie were present.
Records of previous meeting read and approved.
Hearing on Pole location on Pinevale Ave. held at 8:00 P.M.
The Municipal Light Department requested a permit for the location of
two new poles . Mr. J. R. Hall appeared and had no objections. The
Board voted to grant the request and signed the petition.
Mr. Chester J. Wallace of 1 Lowell St. appeared before the
Board and requested an abatement of his Sewer and Water Bills. One
Sewer bill dated December 1931 to June 13, 1932 amounting to $7.23,
and one Sewer bill from June 13,1932 to Dec. 9, 1932, amounting to
$5.60. The Collector' s final demand dated April 1, 1933, totaling
$13.85. The Water bill from June 1932, totaling $10.70.
The Town Counsel advises that where the Collector of Taxes
has sent a final statement, the matter is out of the Board ' s hands .
A letter was written to Mr. Wallace advising him of this , returning
his bills and suggesting payment of the water. bill. Board so voted.
A request was received from Miss Nichols of the High School
for the use of one tennis court by the students at Memorial Park on
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 to 5:00, beginning
May 1. The Board voted to grant same.
Mr. C. E. Tasney, representing the American Legion, asked
if it was possible for the Legion to continue to use the Bleachers

until May 5. He was informed that this was satisfactory to the
Board.
A letter was received from Rev. Chas. Lancaster of
the Episcopal Church requesting the use of the Washington St.
Ball Park on Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 12:00. Ile also re-
quested if possible that the boys might have the use of the Park
one afternoon a week from 3:00 to 5:00.
A letter was received from the Town Counsel, Mr. Davis ,
advising the Board as to the method of procedure with reference
to the changing of names of Public Ways. (See copy of letter on
file. )
A letter was received from the County Commissioners
relative to the maintenance and repair of defects in State and
County aid roads , requesting immediate attention. (See letter
and card in files. )
Board voted to return one set of alphabetical Guides,
if possible, and to purchase 100 Celluloid Insertable Buides
No. C 153 Bu. 1-2 Y & E.
A request was received from the Reading Chronicle asking
that it be connected with the Water System for sprinkler protection.
Board voted to have Secretary write Town Counsel asking whether
our regulations cover unmetered services and if a minimum charge
can be made where a request is received fon connection to water
system for sprinkler protection. Action to be postponed.
Superintendent to investigate to see if award on oil bid
is made to Texas Co. whether Philip O'Brien will get credit there
for.

Superintendent to purchase oil in 5 gallon drums when necessary
until award is made.
Board voted to have 5000 "Cost of leakage charts"
printed sometime before June l: These charts are to be enclosed
with water bills in future.
A request for abatement of water bill amounting to
$54.40 was received from Cemetery Trustees. This excessive cost
was caused by valve not being shut tightly. Board voted to abate
above 50%, making bill $27.20.
Board voted to have a back stop erected at Ball Park by
the American Chain Link Fence Co. at a cost of $64.00.
Board considered unpaid water bills and instructed
Superintendent to allow 10 days after demand for payment is made
before water is shut off.
