HomeMy WebLinkAbout1932-11-25 Board of Public Works Minutes -1- Reading, Mass. , Nov. 25, 1932. The Regular Meeting of the Board of Public Works was called to order at 7:30 P.M. , Messrs. Putnam, Merrill, Fowls and Fairclough were present: also the Superintendent. Mr. Fowle was appointed to act as chairman for this meeting. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. A letter received from the Meadow Brook Golf Club, offering gravel at the following terms:- Reading, Massachusetts, Nov. 23, 1932. Board of Public Works, Reading, Mass. Gentlemen:- Confirming conversation with Mr. McLeod of this Board, relative to the use of gravel pit on Grove St. , the property of this Corporation We agree to sell you such gravel and sand as you may require from the location named at the following price: $400.00 for the first year. 600.00 annually, thereafter. It is understood: (1) that payments are to be .made semiannually, one-half on March 1st and one-half on October 1st of each year. (2) That you are to remove the surface layer of soil and brush and that no expense of such removal is to be assumed by this Corporation. (3) That if the supply of gravel runs out during any year, you will be released from any contract made and this Corporation will be reimbursed on a pro rata monthly basis for the period used during that year. (4) That any contract or agreement made may be terminated at any time by either or the interested parties, on six months advance notice. If further information is desired, it is suggested that you communicate with Mr. Carter K. Ruggles, President of the Club or Mr. Herbert W. MacLeod. Yours very truly, ' BOARD OF GOVERNORS (Sd. ) A. ' It was voted to ,%k Club if our former contract for gravel amended by their terms is acceptable to them and 1£ so to refer the matter to the Town Counsel for a draft of new contract. Board received a notice of a special Town Meeting called for Monday evening, Dec. 12, 1932, asking that all articles therefor be sent to the Selectmen's Office not later than Dec. 1,1932. A letter was received from the State Dept. of Public Works notifying Board that the Commissioners voted to approve work done by this Board, under Sect. 34 Chap. 90 G.L. under contract No. 3808, dated Sept. 27, 1932• Board received Articles for Town Warrant from the Town Counsel for acceptance by Town of Fair Road, Tower Road, Longwood Road, Parkview Road, Longfellow Road, and Smith Avenue, as public streets ; ' and also acceptance of the Water Lien, Act as provided by Section 149 of Chapter 425 Acts of 1931. Mr. Elias B. Currell, Mr. Robert A. Dennison and Mr. Ernie B. Myott, a committee representing the Taxpayers Ass 'n. asked for the receipts of the Water Dept. for the past nine months . Superintendent to compile same. A general discussion of our Water System ensued. The Board considered the Engineer's Report on Hydrant Rentals and voted to accept and place them on file. Board discussed our Sewerage System and the idea of getting more seller connections . The Town Counsel made a report on the establishment of the Town retirement system with a motion and an Article for Warrant. ' Voted to accept and lay on table. -3- Nov. 25, 1932. Cont. A request was received from the County Commissioners , asking approximately the amount of money needed for highway work for the corrin^ year. Board voted to ask for $7,000 and so notify the commissioners. The New England Telephone And Telegraph Co. of Mass. petitioned the Board for permission to remove two poles #3/$ and 1/3/9 on Lowell St. N.E. side from W. street line of Highland St. extended N.
