HomeMy WebLinkAbout1932-10-28 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass . , October 28, 1932. ' The Regular Meeting of the Board of Public Works was called to order at 7:30 P.M. Messrs. Putnam, Merril]., Fairclough and Fowle were present. Superintendent also present. Minutes of previous meeting read and accepted . Mr. Putnam was elected temporary chairman for tonight's meeting. Hearing held at 7:45 P .M. for the approval of a plan of Park St. under the Board of Survey. The following appeared: Mr. & Mrs . Herbert B. Wood Mr. & Mrs . Henry L. LeFave Mr. James Lewis . Mr. Francis Gr-eley Mrs. Annie Poor ' Mr. Oscar H. Lowe Mr. Henry R. Johnson Mr. J. Henry LeFave Mr. Frank Surrette Mr. H. Raymond Johnson Superintendent to change grade to suit and present at next meeting for approval. Letter received from Metal Furniture Co. , complaining about drainage in front of property at #171-173 Main it. Superintendent to acknowledge and state that same will be taken care of. Communication received from Metropolitan District Commission in further reference to amount of sewage being pumped. It stated in part that a total of 3 ,333 ,000 gallons was pumped on Oct. 20th and that the condition is becoming alarming as the capacity of the station is only 4,000,000 gallons per day. Superintendent to , write them that we are continuing our work on the line, trying to locate leaks . Superintendent instructed to repair same as fast as possible. -2- October 28, 1932 Cont. Mr. Ravmond Adams interviewed the Board in regard to the developmentofland in section around corner of No. Main and Forest Streets , together with proposed new road thru that section. Letter received from Reading Taxpayers ' Assn. relative to consideration of reduction in salaries. Superintendent to acknowledge receipt and state that the matter is already under consideration. Board voted to make Mr. Putnam the representative upon this Board to meet with other representatives of different Boards of the Town to consider the readjustment of salaries . This was made necessary by the inability of Mr. Hartshorn to serve owing to his illness. Letter received from State Department of Public Works , notifying us that they would remove the snow on North and South Main Streets from 12/1/32 to 12/1/33 at their expense. Letter received from Town Counsel relative to abatement of water bill of Mr. Charles Gorus , 92 Orange St. Board voted to take no action to collect this bill. Letter received from Town Counsel relative to proposed drainage in Weston Road, to be constructed under the Betterment Act. Placed on file. Letter received from Donald W. Maclean, relative to the cost of sidewalk on Vine St. Superintendent to write the abutters on Vine St. to appear before this Board on Nov. 4th for ' a full explanation of the cost and assessment of this sidewalk. Board voted to adjust water bill of Mrs. Mary E. Whittier, 6 Elliott Street, to make the amount $5.80 instead of $14.20. -3- October 28, 193? Cont. ' Letter received from Chamberlain ex Burnham offering property, for gravel purposes , off Grove Street. Superintendent to write them that this property is already under consideration, it having been offered by another agent. Superintendent reported condition of sidewalk at No. 15 Linden Street. Board voted to nut same in proper condition. Meeting adjourned at 11:10 P.M. A True Record:- Attest:- Robert E. Fowle SECRETARY. ' 1 cont. -2 Relocation or Alteration of High Street and Lowell Street ' Thence S. 450 - 01' - 30" E. , by the present Westerly side line of said Lowell Street; a distance of 32.69 feet to a. stone bound marking the Northerly terminus of the curve of 257.71 feet radius above referred to and the and of said High Street as shown on said plan. Thence Southerly by the curve above mentioned of 257.71 feet radius , a length of 97.90 feet to the stone bound at the point of beginning. Con- taining a total area of 303 square feet, of which 2.85 square feet is from the said Hartshorn land and the balance of 18 square feet is from land of said T9cKenna. ' The above described lines being more fully shown on a plan made under date of August 1931 by Davis & Abbott, Civil Engineers, Reading, Mass . , said plan being a part of this description. We determine that no damages will be sustained by any person or persons in their property by reason of the .taking to be made for this improvement. No betterments are to be assessed for this improvement. This laying cut, relocation or alteration so made by us we hereby report to the Toon for acceptance and recommend that when this report is accepted and adopted by the Town, that said public highways shall thereafter be laid out, relocated or altered in accordance with said plan.
