The Regular Meeting of the Board of Public Works was ,
called to order at 7:30 P.M.
All Members and the Superintendent were present.
Minutes of July 24th meeting read and accepted.
Letter received from the School Committee, relative to
driveway construction at Junior High School, Lowell St. and
Highlands School. Board to assist them in this work, and charges
to be paid by them.
Board signed a permit for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
to install a 24" pipe drain from Main St. , along Charles St. to
brook as shown on a plan.
Board signed plans, showing proposed 6" gas main on High St.
and Forest St. , for Malden & Melrose Gas Light Co. ,
Letter read to Board from Sampson & Weston relative to
the results of their investigation of our present water supply
and their recommendations. Board voted to order special sand
for filters. -
Hearing on Park St. Layout at 8 P.M. Mr. H. C. Wood
appeared. Laid on table until next meeting.
Reading Laundry, represented by Mr. Weeks; Soft Water
Laundry and Ns. Ida appeared relative to the expense of using
sewer and the entrance charges.
Hearing on the Extension of Hancock St. at 8:15 P.M.
No one appeared. Board signed approval.

Board voted to place six (6) Articles in Town Warrant Aug.10,
Glen Rd. , Hancock St. Extn. , Transferring $100. to B. & M. Prom
HighwayMaint. , Summer Ave. & Willow St. Taking, High & Lowell St.
Taking, Birch Meadow $1000.00. ; and Transfer of approximately
$400.00 from Shackford Road to General Highway appropriation, to
draw up all the articles and motions covering same.
Board to hold a Special Meeting at 7:30 P.M. Aug. 3rd and
Superintendent to notify abutters on Glen Rd. and Hancock Street
Extension to appear at that time.
Weston & Sampson to obtain prices for laying approximately
2000 feet of suction pipe at the new water development . Contracts
to be drawn up and approved by Town Council, with a time limit in-
cluded in same.
Letter received from Max W. Rosenthal relative to a claim
resulting from water drainage to property of Geo. Dinkel, Salem
St. , caused by recent cloudburst July 14, 1931. Refer to Law
Committee.

Laving Out of Glen Road
The Board of Public Works of the Town of Reading having
determined and adjudged that common convenience and necessity
require that a town way be laid out as and in the location
hereinafter described, having complied with all requirements
of law relating to notice to the owners of land thereof and
of a hearing thereon, and having met at the time. and place
appointed for such hearing and then and there heard all persons
present who desired to be heard, have laid out as a town way for
the use of the Town running easterly from .Summer Avenue to its
. intersection with a private way known as Hancock Street Extension,
substantially in the location of the private way known as
Middlesex Avenue Extension. The boundaries and measurements of
said way as so laid out are as follows: _
The NORTHERLY line of said Glen Road commences at a
point on the Easterly side line of said Summer Avenue at
land of Annie L. Canty et al, at a point of curve, said
point being S. 160 - 45' - 00" E. , a distance of 213.74
feet, measured along the Easterly side of said Avenue,
from a Stone Bound marking the Southeasterly corner of
said Summer Avenue and Mineral Street;
From thence the said NORTHERLY line runs with a curve
to the Left on a radius of 10 feet, a length of 15.87 feet
across land of the said Canty at al, to a point of tangent;
Thence N. 720 - 19' - 00" E. , by land of the said Canty
\ et al. land of John M. and Mary G. Widell. Charles E. Reck.

Lillian F. Field, Mary L. Muse, Laura W. Adams, Catherine
Reilly, Phillip Reilly, other land of Catherine Reilly, and
land. of Richard Dooley, a distance of 660.72 feet to a point
of curve;
Thence with a curve to the Left on a radius of 20 feet,
a length of 35.14 feet across land of the said Dooley, to
a point of tangent on the Westerly side line of said
Hancock Street Extension and at the end of this layout;
The SOUTHERLY line of said Glen Road is parallel with
and Forty Feet distant from the above described Northerly
line.
Said lines being more fully shown on a plan entitled
"PLAN AND Profile of Glen Road" , made under date of
Febriiary 1931 by Davis & Abbott, Civil Engineers , Reading,
Mass . , said plan being a part of this description.
We determine that no damages will be sustained by any
person or persons in their property by reason of the taking
to be made for this improvement.
No betterments are to be assessed for this improvement.
The laying out so made by us we hereby report to the
Town for acceptance and recommend that said way shall
thereafter be known as a public town way and named Glen Road.

August 109 Town Meeting, 1931
Moved: That the Town accept and adopt the report of the
Board of Public Works on the laying out of extension of Hancock
Street, and that said Board be, and hereby is, authorized to
take lands for the purpose of said way, and to appropriate
to pay the expense of such takings, and land damages incident
thereto, the sum of One Hundred (100) Dollars, by transferring
from the enexpended balance of the annual appropriation for the
construction, maintenance and repairs of highways previously voted
by the Town at the annual meeting held March 1931, and that the
Town Accountant be, and hereby is , ordered to make this transfer.

Lavine Out of Hancock Street Extension
The Board of Public Works of the Town of Reading having determined
and adjudged that common convenience and necessity require that a
town way be laid out as and in the location hereinafter described,
having complied with all requirements of law relating to notice
to the owners of land thereof .and of a hearing thereon, and having
met at the time and place appointed for such hearing and then and
there heard all persons present who desired to be heard, have
laid out as a town way known as Mineral Street, to its intersection
with a town way known as King Street. The boundaries and
measurements of said way as so laid out are as follows:
The WESTERLY line of said Hancock Street Extension
commences at a point on the Southerly side line of said Mineral
Street, said point being N. 720 - 181 - 30" E. , a distance of
640.64 feet from the Southeasterly corner of said Mineral Street
and Summer Avenue;
From thence the said Westerly line runs with a curve to
the RIGHT on a radius of 10 feet, a length of 13.85 feet
across land of Jesse S. Thorn, to a point of tangent;
Thence S. 280 - 21' - 30" E. , by land of said Thorn,
land of now or formerly Lillian G. Wild, Richard Dooley,
- across the easterly end of a private way known as Middlesex
Avenue Extension butnowcalled Glen Road, by land of B. J. y�
Lehan, E. V. Kerans, and land of Grace 0. Kimball, a distance u
of 469.85 feet to a point of curve;

Thence with a curve to the RIGHT on a radius of 20 feet
a length of 3 . 59 feet, across land of the said Kimball, to a
point of tangent on the Westerly side line of said King Street
and at the end of this layout;
The EASTERLY line of said Hancock Street Extension is
parallel with and Forty Feet distant from the above described
Westerly line, running across land of the Boston & Maine Railroad
and thence by land of the John Hickey Estate.
The above described lines being more fully shown on a
plan entitled "EXTENSION OF HANCOCK STREET" made under date of
May 1931 by Davis & Abbott, Civil Engineers, Reading, Mass . , said
plan being a part of this description.
We award damages to the Boston & Maine Railroad, by
reason of the taking to be made for this improvement, in the sum
of One Hundred (100) Dollars, and we determine that no damages
will be sustained by any other person or persons in their property,
by reason of the taking to be made for such improvement.
No betterments are to be assessed for this improvement.
The laying out so made by us we hereby report to the
Town for acceptance and recommend that said way shall thereafter
be known as a public town way and named Hancock Street.
