The Reading Bicentennial Commission met at the Public Library,
0at 8 pm, on 25 January 1975. All seven members were present , and Mrs.
40 Henry Pisarz of the Reading College Club.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as presented.
Mrs. Pisarz„ club president , reported that the re—typing of the
corrected manuscript of the third—grade history had been completed, and
It had been read by Mrs. Barclay and Mrs. Bishop. It was arranged that
Dr. McCauley and Katherine Farquhar will read it In the next few days.
Mrs. Barclay and Mrs. Pisarz will meet on Monday to select pictures.
Mr. Forrest Musser is to make some mall sketches as well.
Mrs. Pisarz expects to have the manuscript ready for Mrs. Cotreau
to draw up specifications by Feb. 6. Since 500 copies will be used for
the schools a run of 750/1000 is contemplated.
Mrs. Bishop reported that most of the pictures have been gathered
for Rooftrees. She agreed to have the manuscript and the total number
of Illustrations (whether glossy prints or negatives) In Mrs. Miller's
hands by Friday, Feb. 3rd. R:rs. Cotreau will draw up specifications
so that bids may be advertised for, as required by law. Five hundred
copies will be printed.
The Commission must approve specifications, and later approve the
bid. If specifications for either are ready the Commission will meet
February 8 and/or February 15th.
The third unfinished project is the Common improvement plan,
In conjunction with the Board of Public Works, Roger Louanis, and the
Garden Club. After discussion, and with reports from a meeting with
Mr. Louanis and Garden Club representatives, the Commission agreed to
report to the Board of Public Works that they approve the concept of
the project as now described, and will support it to the amount of #2000.
Mrs. Miller had conferred with Batten Brothers and had determined
that a suitable sign: stained redwood, 5 sides, white letters applied,
as envisioned, could be obtained, installed, for $1840.
Mrs. Miller reported that November town meeting voted unanimously
to establish a local historical commission , rather than accept the
enabling act provided by Massachusetts statutes. The Commission is to
have five members, appointed by the Selectmen, for three—year terms.
Before completing Its work the Commission must arrange for the
permanent placement of its visual aid equipment , tapes, pictures and
other material for the historic record,and for research use.
A showing of the pictorial record was suggested before the
Commission ceases operations.
The 12 oral history tapes have not all been transcribed, but the
4duplicate tapes will be indexed by the Library ' s Ann Blaisdell who is

developing an index to Vignettes and the Reading Chronicle.
The meeting adjourned, until Feb. 8or 15, subject to need.
